Did anything happen?
have you looked through the photos they are beautiful
Yes the picture footage is amazing isn't it? I always find pics of solar activity quite awe inspiring.
Apparently though the latest eruption was supposed to send solar waves hurtling towards earth and knocking out satellites etc. I didn't hear of anything happening though (admittedly I am not the known for being particularly up to date on day to day news), just wondered if anyone had anything to report.
haven't heard anything about things going awry.
Essentially the Earth's magnetic field acts as a shield against such things, but this depends on a couple of factors, one being the strength of the solar flare/eruption and the other being what state of flux the magnetic field around the Earth is in. Every now and then the magnetic field trailing behind the Earth (in relation to the direction of the Sun) collapses back and creates a hole which is what lets solar radiation through and causes the beautiful aurora (northern lights) sights that can be seen at certain latitudes. If the combination of solar eruption and magnetic field flux were favourable then it could allow a situation where a lot of solar radiation got through and caused disruption.
There's nothing on the BBC News Science section about it. But NASA has some information:
