RE: inteligent design
l mean, don't you find it fascinating to hear what everone thinks
I tottally agree, although I haven't followed this thread & I'm not 'involved' in what it's all about but I fully agree with your statement northstar, I have learnt so much from HP just by reading different points of view:), long may it continue (in a positive way of course;))

RE: inteligent design
:DThank-you. The problem is in any forum is that we are not seeing facial expression or tones of voice. So l wasn't aware that the people in the conversation were feeling upset. And so l am truly sorry if they felt even for a second that l was doing anything nasty or negative at all because that is the farthest thing from my mind.
When l said the comment abourt fueling the fire, l was assuming that everyone was just being lighthearted, thus my comment was lighthearted and l was hoping to spark further interesting comments. l personally love it when someone opposes me!!!:D Feel free to call me a quak!! And before anyone jumps to conclusions, maybe we could realize that some of us have a different cultural personality. [for example mine is laid back and very friendly!!!}
This is the beauty of our world and the gracious wealth given in a forum like this...
cheers!:)

Hi northstar
I've been enjoying your posts (on various threads). In fact, your style brings to mind that of another well respected HP member called Principled (Judy) whom I am sure you'll bump into at some point.
When you say:
maybe we could realize that some of us have a different cultural personality. [for example mine is laid back and very friendly!!!}
I'd like to reassure you that you do come over as both laid back and friendly. Sometimes communicating in print can indeed be difficult but mainly we get by.
With love

ahh, shucks, merci!!!:)
RE: inteligent design
Intelligent design is often confused with creationism. Arguing that species did not just appear out of thin air is not an argument against intelligent design. Intelligent design is about whether or not there is a controlling mind or controlling minds behind the ongoing formation of the universe.
The theory of evolution does not answer the question. It has no cogent argument against intelligent design, neither does it explain development of species despite its claims.
The crux of the theory of evolution is in the statistical model of random mutation. "Randomness" and "magic" are twins butthe formerlooks down on the latter for no convincing reason.
Science has succeeded in formalising"magic" into the notion of "randomness" where it hides many of its "I don't know" answers. E.g..."The 'random' mutation just happened, creating, without preconception,a new form". The existing knowledge in the universe thensomehow developed the foresight,preferentially and without consciousness, to selectthe new and better wisdom in the random mutation. In effect order appears out of chaos, levering itself up by the bootstraps.
It could be argued that the knowledge of "what" is already present but the knowledge of "how" isn't. So the universe may tend towards a particular form (the what) without having the (how) immediately to hand. By a process of trial and error in which randomness is the linchpin, the universe learns the "how" on the fly.
Science is extremely coy about the statistical support for such a model. The level of sophistication observed in nature would statistically appear to require a significantlygreaternumber of generations of species than havein fact been observed.
Alternatively, we could say that the ability to preferentially select indicates a mindin whichthe knowledge (the how) is already vested. The form of that mind could be open to question. As to theorigin of the mind, it may be the notion of origin itself which is to be examined. Perhaps origin has a context only in auniverse of generations, and in looking for a precedent of something without origin within such a context, we can only look in vain.
When we hide our ignorance in the kernel of randomness is it because we have chosen to limit our perspective to what we already know? Are we shy of creativity?
