RE: How can nothing exist?

Ah, but if "nothing" didn't exist we wouldn't be talking about it now. It's not just an "idea", which is just something in your head, but can exist outside in the physical world. It's reality depends on the scope of the model or paradigm you are working in. e.g. In terms of a visual paradigm or model, it's very real to say that there is nothing in the box (even if it had air in it), but in terms of a quantum paradigm it would be incorrect to say there is nothing in the box because, as you say it would still have energy existing inside it in the form of radiation etc.

Let me put this to you, if you are working purely in a visual paradigm, and I gave you the box to look inside and asked you what what you could see in the box (apart from the insides of the box itself); and if you were insistent on the fact that "nothing" doesn't exist, how would you answer me?

nowt 😀

ok, so does that reinforce the theory that nothing is indeed a manmade thing. Am I right there? Or would a dog go to his bowl looking for food and think "ah, there's nothing there" ?

RE: How can nothing exist?

Hi, I'm back from Vegas and losing all my money or I would have been able to contribute to my post.

Firstly I do agree I should have posted this on the philosophy forum but I forgot one existed.

I agree with quite a few of the posts where nothing is an abstract construction of human though. In this case hopefully it is obvious that nothing is in fact a paradox and a dialectic can be productive when dealing with these. Nothing is no thing so we must have an absence of something be it an object, a sense (see below) or and abstract i.e. a number.
Energylz uses an interesting example of how the concept of nothing is used in everyday language and can be projected into a box. Here there is an absence of an object and a sense but only to the person opening the box. Someone else may have answered "walls".

Also infinity was mentioned in the post maybe this should be more fully covered in a seperate thread, although it is a relatively simple subject compared to nothing. I might have posted on the subject before.

Even in a perfect vacum, not found in space, there is energy called vaccum energy due to quantum foam.

I will post more on the subject of "zero" and nothing when I have time.

P.S.
I don't know how to quote in the white box, please help.

RE: How can nothing exist?

hey when i mentined this about a denial of everything, i never meant of a thing, like you said, an apple or whatever, but all the things that have a possible existence by fact.
nothing will be (?) just no air no apples no dogs no humans...etc.but it isnt possible to happen because then existence as itself would lose meaning wouldnt it?
I began a thread about it in the philosophy forum, i am still thinking ideas....[&:]
what is happenning ! oh dear!

RE: How can nothing exist?

As per usual I have come across an intriguing discussion but being in a different time zone from most of the healthypages members I find a slew of responses to try and read through before posting a reply.

Plus Ive been less than frequent here.

So I did my best to read all the replies but cannot honestly say that I read every word.

Its been my experience that all opposing extremes or dualities can be seen in 3 different ways. 1:in either extreme singularly. 2:in both extremes dually. and 3:Both extremes simultaneously or better yet a singularity fused by two extremes.

Simply put, nothing is something as something is nothing.

The idea here is that pure emptiness holds within it the possibility of all things. Why is that ? Because there is no rule or natural law to say it cannot be, no boundary of something that has a beginning or end to surround and confine it.

If you look deep enough into the universe you may find that this is about the only logical explanation for why any of these "somethings" are here in the first place. You can go through all the evolutionary research or the religious dogma but those are just causes and effects. What caused the cause ? Nothing did because there was no-thing to say that nothing could not and so it has.

And since it was all bore from nothing in the first place than all the somethings are frankly akin to its origin. Meaning only when you split the purity apart can you really say it is something when really it is nothing disguised as something seperate.

Things are not seperate, everything is connected. Even the space between the things connects it because as I previously stated, nothing is something and vice versa so the space between things is a piece of the things around it.

It is illusory but not an illusion that we and all these somethings exist.

You can't really say that the back of a penny is not a penny. Its just the extreme you are angled towards in that moment of time.
