How can nothing exist?
"Nothing" is an abstraction. It lives in language only and in fact it only exists in relation to the idea of something.. as does any "thing". Chairs only exists because of all the stuff that isn't chairs.
Just because we can use the language to ask the question "how can nothing exist?" doesn't mean that there is an answer available, but it is a useful qustion to dwell ypon and mull over. If the notion of "nothing" is useful - like zero or negative numbers - then super-doop! we all win.
There are bound to be abstractions out there which most of us have no knowledge of (that exist for those that understand and use them) that don't exist in 3-dimentional form.

RE: How can nothing exist?
nothing exist because we had created it.
when we talk about nothing, we talk about existence. so it will depend on what does existence mean for us .
I believe that everything that exists, is something. but maybe the question could come up to my mind and ask myself, what is what doesnt exists? what does not exist is nothing. so if nothing becomes existant, it means that it had created itself or someone, or something else had created it, and give it the chance to exist, but then if nothing exists, it will become into something, and will stop from being nothing.
so maybe everything is nothing until it begins to exist and becomes into something.
maybe "that point of beginning to exist"is a point that means we notice of the existence of anything.
who knows if existance for "others" could be different ,and they would consider Nothing in their lives as the same as we consider something in ours?maybe?
I think that anything i keep thinking on could become existant...I better stop there by now...
what do you think then seraphsleeping?
thatin terms of existance.
different situations when we talk about our language maybe, maybe we just refer to nothing as something with not important meaning for us. or else.
RE: How can nothing exist?
hey rocklogic, i think your response is good. but also i think that we need those abstractions, so i think they kind of come alive as you well said, when we start to do some use of them. I think those abstractions becomes into part of "in here" rather than "out there" and they stop from being abstractions.
do you think it makes any sense?

la titi,
so if I understand you right, and if I do then I agree with you...
Something exists when it part of the consciousness regardless of the label we give it.
This doesn't mean that things can't exist if we are not conscious of them, just that we have not brought them into our conscious and given them a label.

RE: How can nothing exist?
Is this science or philosophy?
If a crop of wheat was stolen from a field, the wheat would still exist, albeit elsewhere. One has to have 'something' - a 'nothing' never exists. Even 'zero' is 'something.' A 'minus' does exist in nature, but it is a mathematical 'something', which bounds upon the realms of quite complicated physics. To use the previous example of 'minus six trees' - the trees would have had to exist in the first place for them to be 'minused' from the scene. One cannot say, 'Those trees were minused' if they didn't exist in the first place.
