RE: Nothing doesn't exist...

ORIGINAL: LonelyCoyote
Not really into science but this topic caught my attention.

Just one small thought.

Since the world works in balance, the sun and moon, day and night, good and evil, then if there is something there has to be the opposite which is nothing.

Hi Lonely Coyote, and welcome to Healthypages.

Does the world work in Balance though? If there were balance then nothing would change (as in everything would stay the same). Why are the Sun and Moon considered to be a balance? Day and Night are only in balance in the sense that one contains direct daylight, but the other does not, whereas if you look more closely then there is rarely occasions when the amount of daylight time is equal to the amount of night time, therefore it's out of balance. Good and Evil.... well, that'sa matter of personal belief. So many people say you can't have good without evil. I beg to differ, but that's another discussion (which I'm sure we've covered in a previous thread several aeons ago).

Everything, including nothing,is something, Nothing is nothing. Contradiction or not?

On a more scientific note...

The only reason scientists believe in things like anti-matter (the opposite of matter) is because of Einsteins equation:

"... the energy of a particle that has mass m and momentum p is given by

E^2 = m^2c^4 + p^2c^2 (notation: ^ = to the power of)

which reduces to the well known E = mc^2 when the mementum is zero."

But this resultant, well known, equation actually comes from taking the square root of the full equation, and as with all square roots in mathematics, there is a negative root as well as a positive root. i.e. 2x2=4 as does -2x-2=4, so the square root of 4 is really +2 or -2.

Therefore, it has been deduced by scientists that Einsteins equation is really...

E = +mc^2 or E = -mc^2

This implies the existence of negative mass which is in turn considered to be anti-matter.

This result of the square root in mathematics is the whole basis for scientists believing that electrons can travel backwords in time (I won't go into the details, but I can recommend a good book if you're interested).

And before anybody starts going on about this being particle physics and it being "old hat" and everything is quantum science now, I've got news for you. Quantum physics and quantum particles are based around exactly the same principles and assumptions.

It seems that for something to be considered scientifically true, it must be able to be worked out using existing mathematics. I wonder if anybody has considered that, perhaps, current mathematics is a bit "old hat" and doesn't cater for everything in the real world. My point is that just because mathematics says that a square root can have a negative as well as a positive result, this is being used as "proof" that things exist (such as anti-matter and the possibility of time travel). It is truly only the scientists belief that these things exist that makes them so.

Maybe nothing doesn't exist, maybe it does. Whether mathematics "proves" it one way or the other is immaterial in my opinion, it's what you believe in that dictates whether something exists or not.

Yeah the nothing completely messes with my head. And thinking about the start of the universe before time and the size of the universe isd jus like [sm=speechless-smiley-040.gif]

Oh what fun - years since I finished my philosophy degree and MA... Oh what is the universe expanding into? Space is not nothing so what is 'space' expanding into?

For a different slant try Heidegger - Why is there anything rather than nothing?

What are you saying when you say something 'is' - declaring it's being.
When you say it 'is not' you are not stating it's lack of being.

All recurssion, dualityand tautology - an intractable puzzle - something to fill up time (well our time) until death hey...

And the obvious answer - nothing doesn't exist! Existence encompasesbeing with in its own definitioni.e. existence.

It is in the nature of our language that this insoluable.

Mathematics is a law unto itself and one I have yet to get my head round...

Nothing is a word it does not have a meaning.

Refer to the farmer post. If a crop fails, it fails but consider this residue remain on a ground. On a cellular level there will be remains of thecrop. E.g.; you set a field on fire it destroys everything, but residue of the field remains, better know as ashes.

So matter cannot be destroyed.Nothing new there then - see how I just used the word nothing in a completely ordinary context...
