I think the problem with a lot of prophecy is that it can stop people living their lives, almost sapping the motivation to do anything, similar to conspiracy theories really.

Why does it have to be a doom day. Why not an amazingly wonderful start - a new beginning or even the age of Aquarius kicking in, that long awaited time when harmony, peace and goodwill is what we aspire to. Heaven on earth can happen.

hi, according to my reiki master and angelic reiki master,it is called the ascension and the golden age, where the earths vibration is raising and so are we, they say it has already started and it means a lot of us will become more spiritual and may already have symptoms such as lightheadiness,vibrations in the body all kind, there are 2 dates 11/11/2011 and 21/12/2012 that will be significant where the planets line up,they assure us it doesnt mean the end of the physical world as such, just the changes of beliefs and attitudes and realising we need to treat earth better and with respect.our guides and angels have a higher vibration so if ours are raised we can better communicate with them,i'm not worried about it now.

I guess we will have to wait and see!

I was very sceptical about astrology until I read Richard Tarnass' Book "Cosmos and Psyche." He argues, with endless tediously presented evidence, that major events in history that relate to periods of social change and upheaval have coincided with alignments of the two outer planets, Pluto and Uranus. The period between 2008 and 2012 is one such period of alignment.

However, change of any kind can produce all sorts of effects on the human mind and when this happens on a mass scale such effects can become wildly magnified. I firmly believe that apocalyptic hypotheses concerning the current process of social change, which is undeniably taking place, are reactions of hysteria.

I see a remarkable process going on - some of the most exciting and positive processes I think have taken place in history.

well I have not studied for four years to gain employment to find out in 2012 that it all goes pearshaped, bit of a waste then, but I will be able to counsel those in need though.

There's a new movie coming out soon called simply '2012'. I've seen trailers for it a couple of times when I've been to the cinema recently. It's the usual CGI stuff - American icons such as the Capitol building crumbling as thousands flee (I expect they studied the footage of 9/11). And in the middle of all this destruction and 'it's the end of the world', the hero tells his family 'We've got to get to the airport'. DOH!

Nevermind. I was only commenting that the movie '2012' had been made before (in one guise or another, and I picked the movie I did because I liked it and it had good special effects for the time). I was just having a go at the whole 2012 thing and how Holywood (and specifically Roland Emmerich) jumped on it... The end of the world is the end of the world. Doesn't really matter how it comes about... 😀

I'm coming rather late into this and it has probably all been said earlier, but thought I'd give you my little contribution.

Throughout history there have been predictions about the end of the world – these were particularly in evidence in the lead up to the change in calendar dates from the 1900’s to the 2000’s – not that a date on a calendar has any power in itself! As you know, nothing happened, just like nothing has ever happened when various groups have taken to the mountain tops (or committed mass suicide) to await the destruction they were expecting.

I don’t know anything about the Mayan calendar, but I understand that it ends at the year 2012 – but so what? I’m not being trivial here, honestly, but the clock on my video recorder ended with the year 2003 and I had to re-program it back to 1997 (or 98 – can’t remember) in order to set the recorder (and then change it again with leap years!) though thankfully I've now got a combined video/DVD set.) The Mayan had to end their calendar sometime and it just happened to be 2012. (At least it wasn’t a commercial reason like hoping we’d buy a new video recorder!)

I also believe passionately that we all have to change, but we each have to start with ourselves. We are each responsible for working out our own salvation. We cannot force anyone into redemption of thought through fear – it has to come through spiritual growth and understanding. It’s up to each of us to live our lives in the highest way we know how, to be a shining example of goodness that will attract others.

What I do believe is happening is the approaching end of the age (or the end of the world as we know it) of rampant materialism - greed, crime, selfishness and self-gratification. There is a huge growth in the interest and practice of spirituality; people are looking for a deeper meaning and practice of their religions. Some businesses are beginning to think about the place of ethics and morality, of thinking of the greater good, rather than of selfish profits for the few, of solely economic considerations. Hopefully, world governments and the banking sector will follow suit.

It is beginning to dawn on people that we can no longer live for ourselves, that what happens in one part of the world eventually affects us all, that we are all one global family and we need to care for our poorer brothers and sisters. I’m not talking about endless charitable handouts, but ways of giving people work and allowing them the dignity to care for themselves. There is so much wisdom in these words of a Talmudic philosopher: "The noblest charity is to prevent a man from accepting charity; and the best alms are to show and to enable a man to dispense with alms."

Mary Baker Eddy made several prophecies too about the end of evil and material beliefs and she saw that there would be upheaval and “an interruption to the general routine”. She writes:

[COLOR="Blue"]“…These disturbances will continue until the end of error, when all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth.

Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization. This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding. Belief is changeable, but spiritual understanding is changeless.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures p. 96)

I love her definition of the Millennium: [COLOR="Blue"]The millennium is a state and stage of mental advancement, going on since ever time was. Its impetus, …………. is marked, and will increase till all men shall know Him (divine Love) from the least to the greatest, and one God and the brotherhood of man shall be known and acknowledged throughout the earth. (Miscellany p 239)

I think you are right Sunny. There are big changes a comin. But the end of the world. That is just thoughtless scaremongering. !! and just to earn a few extra quid.

I don't know how true it is but it is said that this year is calculated to be the Mayans 2012 ?. Maybe V could enlighten us whether this is true or not ?

to be honest I do not believe in this 2012 but rather believe in climate change etc. experts said recently that our climate as we know it will never stay as it is (gosh, not good day to make proper english sentences, sorry), the typical seasons etc.

I tend to get anxious about climate change and honestly that s enough for me, dont need mass destruction propheties, which at my very core, I dont buy. Numbers, dates, etc, all man made, except of course there is something vaguely resembling "time" in the universe, in planet movements and cycles etc. but even then, even then....it is Ryhtm, but rythm pf what? of where? like a hearbeat...then of what organism? of God/dess? ok, am going into abstract thinking here and totally oftopic.

Just an idea, lately on a French documentary about the discovery of giant underground labyrinths just full of crystals the size of buildings and lakes, somewhere in ...Err...hope I remember it well I think it was Peru (something to do with the biggest underground pure water lake, if that helps), or Brazil?
Anyway, the nature-loving scientists were evoking a new theroy, after the string theroy that would explain the universe.

Dadadam! The universe would, in fact, be one crystal! (ok, spoiling the sensation here, it might have been crystals, in the plural. sorry!) because of the reflection thing. They found that galaxies are somehow "repeated". and they re reminded of the optical properties of crystals, how they divde the light and sometimes duplicate images...so our universe/universes would be crystals. growing, pulsing, and we would be inside one, with other similar one outside. gosh, all this is so vague, I wish someone could tell me more about it, need to search google.

So about 2012, kind of felt it was true for a while as it seems that the news just throw up more and more disasters and violence plus climate change.
now Im no believer but would love to hear what those NASA experts supposedly found out. Actually, no, would rather not hear any ominous prophecies, as someone else said before, it only scares us into paralysis and makes us feel nihilistic and selfsih in the end.

I listened to these two guys, who I believe are scientists, on coasttocoastam.com radio but fell asleep after the first hour. It's on very late but you can subscribe to their archives. Loads of interesting guests on. I copied this summary from the website:

Hoagland[/url] for a discussion of the 2012 phenomenon and what it means both physically for Earth and sociologically for its denizens. "My sense is that we are, in fact, living the end of a rare and mysterious cycle of time," Braden mused. Regarding mainstream scientists who dismiss the idea of a 2012 event, Hoagland explained that this is because they refuse to examine the emerging science of torsion physics, which he believes plays a major role in the cycle coming to an end.

Braden noted that data from both archaeological and polar ice cap studies suggests that the current physical condition of Earth is very similar to previous time periods going through the cycle. Additionally, he explained that his research on polar shifts indicates that such an event requires the magnetic field of earth passing through a certain low threshold. Currently, Braden said, Earth's magnetic field is "so far above the measurement" that the possibility of crossing the threshold in the next three years "looks pretty slim." On the concern that many have with 2012-related disasters, Braden said, "physical changes, we've always survived. What we haven't survived is the way that we treat one another as we go through that change."

To that end, Hoagland noted an ongoing increase in cultural polarization, a trend that can be seen most clearly in contemporary politics. Looking at the past, he recalled how this polarity may be a symptom of the impending 2012 event as "these other civilizations killed themselves" while going through the cycle. "It's more the psychological, consciousness aspect of this physics that we may have to fear, at the moment, than the physical aspect," Hoagland suggested. As such, he expressed concern that 2012 could be used by nefarious forces to steer humankind towards a darker future.
