Translations of short exchanges of Welsh here would be much appreciated, and if anyone wants to brush up their 'rusty' lingo

😀 Nice one! Thank you 🙂

I think your hand might have accidentally slipped when you did the quote though ... a bit of mine got chopped off:

Of COURSE you wouldn't get kicked off, LOL 😀 ... but perhaps not a whole THREAD, since other members DO enjoy reading the regional forums, and we have to bear in mind that English is the main language of HP, read and understood all over the world, which Welsh may well not be.

Translations of short exchanges of Welsh here would be much appreciated, and if anyone wants to brush up their 'rusty' lingo, there's always the PM system 😉

Thanks, folks 🙂

Writing personally, I had a holiday cottage on long-term let ... a large old farmhouse actually ... many years ago, inland from Abersoch and down half a mile of grass track. Electricity yes, but no running water or plumbing, and a chemical loo. Water was pumped by hand from a well. It was in idyllic surroundings and we loved it 🙂

My grandparents on one side of my family were from Wales, I also lived in a tiny village near Caernarfon (note that's not the English spelling!) for a while and then moved to an even smaller village near Pant Glas / Garndolbenmaen for a while. I do have a (albeit basic) understanding of Welsh and my wife was taught Gaelic (Irish) by an Irish friend of ours. It would be nice to brush up on my Welsh and some regional posts in Welsh with the translations would be nice to see a) Because some of us can brush up a bit and b) I feel the Welsh language does need to be kept alive. However, as Hol said, the translations should be on here so that people who read this thread and can't speak Welsh (shame on you if you live there!) can still take part in the discussion. Also, keeping posts in Welsh as concise as possible, longer ones would be better held as conversations by PM.

Okay, so I shall PM you my 'rusty' Welsh! :rollaugh:

Glad you enjoyed your stay in the cottage, it is a lovely place to live.

I like the Welsh language and speak bits daily with my children but it's a bit of an odd thing, some of the people who are fluent, first language can neither read nor write in Welsh.

I was stunned when I was coming home with homework - a loooong time ago and none of my fluent friends could help.

There are differences in spoken/written Welsh depending on which part of Wales you live.
Some are subtle ie Pont and Bont for bridge but others are not.
I haven’t got a Welsh speaking friend where I currently live, I have to go deeper into Wales to find them.
This is why I have become 'rusty'.

I'll seek further clarification on the best method of 'rust removal' and get back to you 😉

Louisa, I'll happily reply to some banter should you want to pm me sometime!!
And you make a fair point on written welsh - I've found that it's increasingly common among people to just mis-spell everything, as their language as a spoken word bears no resemblance to the more formal Welsh when it is written. It's sad, but there's nothing we can do about it!

You COULD send me home for ONE month, that would do it. 😀

Some written Welsh mistakes.

Sorry if there's been any confusion here, folks 😮

Initially, the thought of long threads in Welsh was a bit daunting, which is why the original suggestion was made to use the PM system.

However, the moderators have now conferred further and confirming Bannick's post, we feel it would be of benefit to our Welsh members to discuss and use the Welsh language on this forum, with PMs as you consider appropriate.

So by all means feel free to hold conversation provided that, as already requested, translations into English are given. It should be very interesting to read!

Hope that clarifies 🙂

Shwd Mae Pawb? - how is everyone?

Gosh, I haven't written Welsh since school - although I'm not so bad at reading - as you say the spelling tends to get to the level of slang!!!

It;s like someone said earlier - I count myself as being first language Welsh throughout my childhood and don't remember having to learn either Welsh or English 0 using both naturally. Having been away from Wales on and off throught my adult life - the written language tends to get very rusty!

Good luck with this thread. Pob Lwc [ literally every luck!]

Bore da (Good Morning)

I am delighted that the Welsh language is being kept alive
on HP and that some of you guys that speak the language will post some words and translate for us. I can remember some words from my family (half Welsh).

I was holidaying in Cornwall recently and noticed that some of the old Cornish names are also similar to the Welsh i.e. Pont (Bridge) same in French too. I read whilst in Cornwall that Welsh has more similarities with the Cornish language than other Celtic languages such as Gaelic. Language is such a fascinating thing, well I find it so any way.

Love Binah

Evening

I'm also from South Wales, even though I dont spend much time there anymore I still consider myself Welsh, as for speaking Welsh unfortunately I dont, I know the basics but that is it, as for writing in Welsh I can only just manage English!

Hey everyone.

Just did a post asking if there was anyone from South Wales and then saw this 😀

Been living down in South Wales for 8 years, first in Cardiff and then to Barry. Family are all Welsh and though I was born and brought up in the West Midlands, I see myself as Welsh. Knew that I would move down here permenantly one day as I loved visiting family down here as a child.

Came down here after Uni with my b/f who is now my husband. He's a Yorkshire man and fitted right in down here. Yorkshire and Welsh people are so similar in their friendliness.

Look forward to cahtting to you all! 😀
