Elephants are extremely intelligent. They say in his previous life, Buddha was an elephant. There was a wild fire, a little creature sought shelter under him. The elephant sacrificed his life to save that creature. Due to that sacrifice, he was able to self-realize.

Many animals show more wisdom, understanding and connection than some humans.:)

As far as the connection is concerned, that's because most animals (wild ones, at least) don't have the disconnecting experiences that most humans have.
