Now this is a seriously useful website:

It lists non-geographical alternative telephone numbers ... 0870, 0845 etc ... and gives the wherewithall to find the original 01 numbers to call instead ... thus avoiding, in many instances, incurring national rate call charges. You can search by name or number. Not exhaustive, the site owners ask for contributions by way of additions and updates.

Anyone who has a package with their telephone company for free calls to numbers beginning with 01 or 02 will find this especially invaluable, particularly if having to use an 0870 number to speak to a local store about availability of a product, on top of which you get "Please listen to the following options ..." as happened to me just today[:@] The phone companies seemingly rake it in by way of "commission".

handy. the companies who own the 0870 number also make a bit of money too IIRC.

RE: AVOIDING 0870 TELEPHONE CHARGES

I had to do a bit of guesswork here, Darren! If IIRC is short for If I Read Correctly, then you did read correctly, only I didn't phrase it too well in the first place [&o]

Yes, the phone companies make money, and also the owners of the numbers get commission when the numbers are called.

Now for another rider to my first post:

Some of the 01 numbers quoted by may now be defunct, as I discovered this morning. Having to use an 0845 number because I only got a recorded message on the 01 one, I asked why and was told that this organisation who previously were a local office ... not local to me, so I missed out ... is now a call centre for a wider geographical area, so they've done away with the 01 number. I could have called that for free on my phone company deal. Pity that [&:] Ah, well, can't win 'em all. It's still very useful 😉

with regard to this, i did listen to the interview with a great supporter of this,

His name is Martin Lewis and is a regular interviewee on Radio 2 jeremy Vine show, thsi is what he says on the site.......

Many companies advertise a separate number that can be used when calling from abroad - This usually begins in the format +44 - There is nothing to stop you using this number from the UK (as it is a normal rate telephone call), and will be included in any inclusive minutes provided by your landline or mobile phone provider. Many others will give you a standard number if you ask.

Quite right, Mark, and thanks for pointing out the bit you put in the quote box. Of course, one has to ignore the +44 at the front (sometimes given as 0044) and then dial the missing 0 (zero) before the 1.

IME, some will give you a standard number, some won't. Still, if you don't ask ......

Laura.

It seems that passing on this kind of information is proving beneficial to the end user, doesn't it? Re the money saving site, yup, there's a thread on that one, too! LOL

Mark, re the "knock off the +44 and add 0" option, - apparently it flashes up "International" on the screen at their end, and callers from abroad get priority because of the call charges. So they don't have to wait in a queue. 😉

I've just found a fabulous new site that may be of interest. GetHuman - how to get through to a person and not an automated response system.

Hello harry potter and welcome to Heathypages

I'm glad you found my opening post here useful, and it seems it is indeed popular. Not only does a search on the subject line of this thread reveal that it's the No. 1 result from over 47,000, but I've also been informed that it has recently been copied almost word for word onto another forum, though sadly without any acknowledgement.

I hope you enjoy future visits to HP, and wonder if perhaps you might like to visit the New Members forum and say hello to everyone:

You can be sure of a warm welcome 🙂

Best wishes,

Say No To 0870 is a great site and I have used it many many times. I imagine I have saved quite a lot of money too.

Highly recommended.

hi

i have an 0870 number = I got it for £100 because i wanted to move around and take the number with me. It was good but I didnt get any money in commission but the worst thing was customers thought I was getting money - which didnt really fit in my brand at all - so i have stopped using it - although it is on the old leaflets. I think it is really bad that they make so much money - especially as I was waiting ages to speak to the tax office and paying a small fortune today as i waited!
