what about suggesting that as well as both doing the reading at their own weddings, they each also say what this reading means to them and why they choose it. That way theyd both geth the reading but it would still be different for both their special days?

What a shame this is - I can't see why they cannot both have the same reading, personally I think that would be lovely, as you said they were always close.
Mirroring one part of their weddings could be viewed as a bond in their friendship.
Or maybe I am being naive trying to look for a positive in this situation.

Whichever way, it's not worth falling out over.

Best wishes to all, I really hope they can overcome this quickly.

Thank you for replies – I agree with you all – it is certainly not worth falling out over, I think it’s very sad – I’m not getting involved in their disagreement, both my niece and nephew mean the world to me (my believe it’s my nephews girlfriend behind it all, Sunada, I think you may be right, just the tip of the iceberg), I just want them to move on and am as you suggest am sending love to the situation.

It seems to me that many weddings these days have got totally out of hand... They're often treated as more of a show of status or another opportunity for conspicuous consumption rather than two people making certain commitments to each other... I just wouldn't put up with family members arguing over such silly things, if people get offended then that's their problem...

We got married at a registry office with no friends or family present. Simple, cheap and so much more fun than a 'typical' wedding...

(I know that won't help your situation much, but we would never have considered having a big wedding...)
