Watched a Tv programme last night on a village, in I believe Devon, that has sprung up with Eco Friendly houses.
The great thing about these places apparently is half price fuel bills.
Now, if new houses are going to be built then I guess they should be Eco friendly. However, what struck me about these places was the price. Very expensive so as usual the locals couldn't afford them, so outsiders with money were buying them up. Probably if they offset their fuel saving against the price they paid for their houses they would see there wasn't a saving at all. In fact moneywise they would be worse off.
What annoys me is when you see perfectly good houses being destroyed only to have others built in their place.
I personally live a house built in 1936 which is in good condition. As far as I can see it doesn't impact on the planet taking into account the amount of time it has been standing and of course there are many more places in London alone that are much older and are still nice comfortable homes for people to live in.
i agree. i remember watching an episode of the secret millionaire in which the local council were tearing down houses just to build new ones, instead of refurbishing the old ones. the current residents would not be able to afford the new homes and were distraught and didnt know what to do.
Eco Houses on the continent
Hi,
Im new to HP!!!
Hopefully the UK will catch up soon with the Continent on building Eco houses. A less expensive option, than having to build a house is to have the entire house refurbish with the latest standards of Passive Houses. You don't need to buy a brand new thing to help with the environment! Check out the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_house
I'm fortunate enough to live in a passive house which has been built with wood and cellulose, not a single brick!!! However, we paid continental price. We feel that at least we are doing something for the environment by reducing our carbon emissions!
