Hi guys - I have received this through one of the groups i subscribe to and thought some of you might find it of interest:

Dear friends,

As the worst floods in sixty years drench the UK, it seems like the right
time for an update and reminder about the Camp for Climate Action, which
is taking place next month (14th – 21st August). If you didn’t make it to
last year’s camp outside Drax power station in Yorkshire, we had over 600
people, 100 workshops, a successful day of action against Drax and
national media coverage, making it one of the major climate action events
of the year.

This year’s camp will be taking place near Heathrow airport, and will
again be a celebration of low-impact living, education, ideas-sharing and
action! This time around, we are hoping to get not just hundreds, but
thousands of people to the Camp, and make an even bigger impact than last
year. Anyone is welcome to come along, either to visit or (better still)
to stay and take part – the Camp will again be run cooperatively, without
leaders, by everyone who comes along.

As well as challenging the Government's plans to expand aviation at the
expense of our shared climate, and support local people in their struggle
against the third Heathrow runway, the Camp aims to showcase examples of
high-quality low-impact living, share information, skills and ideas, and
most importantly of all help to build a powerful people-driven movement
for climate action. It's going to be brilliant. More information can be
found at www.climatecamp. org.uk (a full timetable of workshops will be
available soon).

We’d be very grateful if you could forward this message on to all the
interested people you can think of, and encourage them to visit the
website to find out more. Please do get in touch if you’d like any
leaflets or posters about the Camp, or a copy of the film we made about
last year’s event; if you’d be interested in running a session at the Camp
or helping out in other specific ways; or if you simply have any other
questions about the Camp. You can contact us by email
([link= http://uk.f263.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose?To=info%40climatecamp.org.uk ]info@climatecamp. org.uk[/link] / [link= http://uk.f263.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose?To=dannychivers%40riseup.net ]dannychivers@ riseup.net[/link]) or by phone: 0777 286
1099.

Hope to see you at the camp!

Best wishes,

RE: camp for climate action

Not directed at you Wispy...but when I read 'thousands at Camp' and 'Heathrow' my heart sank. I am dead against the third runway, mainly because it threatens my dad's cemetery, but on the other hand I don't want thousands of protesters turning up and making a camp out of it.

There are better ways of protesting, and I am a dab hand at most of them via letter writing. The pen is truly mightier than the sword.

Patsy.

P.S. How are these protesters going to reach the 'Heathrow camp.? Walk?

RE: camp for climate action

Don't worry Songstress - I can quite understand your viewpoint.

The way I read this though is that although it is based (this year) at Heathrow it finds alternate venues each year that will help to highlight the ecological message it spreads. I'm sure that there will be some Heathrow protestations going - and obviously the message about climate change (I'm sure Venetian will have something to add about this and whether its fact or fiction ![sm=cool-smiley-021.gif]) is very important. As well as talks about scientific issues and politics there will be many workshops about sustainable living: permaculture and compost etc.

I didn't go to last years so can't answer your question about transport - I'm sure there'll be stuff on the website though [link= http://www.climatecamp.org.uk ]www.climatecamp.org.uk[/link] . Other events I have attended have had people travelling by train and then walking to the site, or making arrangements over the net and sharing transport. I do know they are asking people not to bring cars if at all possible and charging more for those that do - there is also a meet-up point at Staines station.

I think/hope that an event like this will raise the topic on people's agenda and encourage them to also follow your example and write letters, if they have attended some of the talks their letters will then be well informed, with a scientific base and not just from an emotive standpoint - although obviously there is very much a place for emotive letters too.

Regards - Wispy~Misty

They have a strong policy on people using public transport to get there. thats why BAA just had massive court action to try to get the police to stop people who may be involved from using the tube, sections of the M4 and M5 - fortunately, that failed and they only managed to get an injunction against 3 people and 1 organisation.

It would have been a catastrophe for direct action and civil liberty in this country had that action succeeded.

Ive read the camps workshop list for this year and it sounds like there'll be lots of good education going on.

I wish them well

Darren
