This is relevant to everyone here whether you are feeling down or even up, watch the first 20 minutes of 'The Secret'. I am sure you will be highly exhilarated after watching it.

I use this every day and is the basis for the therapy that I practice. If you've seen 'The Secret' or have just watched this introduction then please comment.

Personally it takes me away from the feeling of being restricted and literally puts me in the driving seat.

Personally I find "The Secret" (which isn't a secret really) a little too focused on increasing ones own wealth, which isn't really what the Law of Attraction is all about, although I agree it is inspirational.

If people found The Secret inspiring then they may like to read "The Master Key System" from where the Law of Attraction came. The copy I have () includes the original 1912 text in half of the book and the other half is the same teachings but edited to be in modern day language and context so it's easier to read.

I agree that 'The Secret' isn't really a secret at all and it does have some irritating aspects to it. However, I really, really love the audio book version. Rhonda Byrnes hasn't brought us anything new and makes unsubstantiaited claims about historical figures, but what she has done is simplified 'The Law of Attraction' and fed it to us in bite-size chunks, which is what I like about it, despite its flaws. I first got into this idea that your beliefs create your reality with Louise Hay, but I find she goes far too much into analytical depths, assuming we all had a bad childhood and that our parents also had a bad childhood. Also, I find Gerry and Esther Hicks really hard to get on with - they are wordy, talk in riddles and there's something a bit off about their morals. There is an overload of these type of authors, so even though 'The Secret' could almost be descibed as average, what it does do is bring lots of authors/speakers together and makes it more palatable.

I've watched the film once, but listened to the book several times, I find it helps me focus, makes me feel positive and feel in control again. And unlike the film, it doesn't just focus on wealth.

I have to admit I found it a bit disappointing and somewhat irritating. Maybe I'd have a different perspective if I listened to it again, but I'm not too excited at the prospect of doing so.

I know the intro seems to concentrate on wealth but the remainder is broken down into different aspects of life.

I think the title 'The Secret' is more of a marketing ploy and it's good that they don't really play on that, by admitting its the law of attraction early on.

Again I don't see the wealth aspect being over played in the film.

My daughter is quite negative and does suffer from bullying at school, she was bouncing around after watching it and made some significant changes in her life. It really surprised me that she took the concept on board.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you find irritating?

Hi Hertford

It obviusly depends on one's current spiritual perspective, as to whether it is helpful or not. I've travelled a wonderful, loving spiritual journey this last 15 years which has given me a perspective that is slightly different. I do not appreciate being told what I want - I know that, and the repetitions were annoying. I can't remember precisely what I took exception to as I listened to it some 18 months to 2 years ago - I just remember being unimpressed, when I expected so much from it.

However I can see that for someone who has yet to travel their spiritual journey it has many ideas to offer and good luck with it. It obviously hit the right button for many people and is a good starting point.

I'm glad you found it inspiring. I might be tempted to listen again sometime.

Well I certainly wouldn't say that I haven't yet started a spiritual journey.

As I pointed out earlier it managed to help my daughter over come bullying, I see that as a fantastic plus and has little to do with wealth that has been commented on so much.

However I can see that for someone who has yet to travel their spiritual journey it has many ideas to offer and good luck with it.

Actually, it was a while ago that I watched the film, so I can't even properly remember if it does focus on wealth, so ignore what I said before. The audio book focusses on all sorts of things, health, weight issues, world peace, relationships...

When I first started listening to it, I think what I found irritating was these claims that Byrnes had found 'evidence' spanning hundreds of years, but she doesn't specifically reference anything, which I think is a shame. But once I got into it, I really liked it and it's helped me a lot more than all of the other spiritual/self-help books I've read over the past ten years. So I would be inclined to agree, it's not just just for those at the beginning of their journey. In fact, for me, it summarises a lot more concisely and simply what I've read in greater detail before.

I also feel quite satisfied with it - I no longer feel the need to read countless books to make me feel better or to find answers, it's enough for me just to return to it now and then.

The film does exactly the same, the underlying message is to focus on what you want and not what you don't want. I haven't listened to the audio book, did it have the story of Morris Goodman?

The doctors nichnamed him 'The Miracle Man', he had a plane crash and they said that he would be a vegetable the rest of his life. He was able to communicate through blinking and communicated that he would walk out of the hospital by Christmas, which is exactly what he done. The guy shouldn't have even been able to breath on his own as his diaphragm had been destroyed.

When I first started listening to it, I think what I found irritating was these claims that Byrnes had found 'evidence' spanning hundreds of years, but she doesn't specifically reference anything, which I think is a shame.

During the film quotes are posted up by prominent historical figures, from these quotes it is evident they are referring to the law of attraction. For example, "All that we are, is a result of what we have thought" - Buddha, "If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right." - Henry Ford, who allegedly learnt the law of attraction from Andrew Carnegie. I can't remember them all, also there is the Emerald Tablet which is the historical document which explains the relationship between man and the universe. I would think this was the particular inspiration for calling the film 'The Secret'

But once I got into it, I really liked it and it's helped me a lot more than all of the other spiritual/self-help books I've read over the past ten years. That's quite interesting, the book Rhonda Byrne found "The Science of Getting Rich" states that once you understand the law of attraction you don't need countless other theories to try out, only to refer back to the law of attraction.

What inspired me was that I had been using the law of attraction with the therapy that I use without realising it. So it has enabled me to better myself as a therapist and give a more help to people.

I do know the "Secret"

>>>Do you know 'The Secret'?

A bit of an illogical question, there? If it was a secret we wouldn't know it. 🙂

It's a marketing ploy along with the name itself. It's hardly a "secret" - it's been known through human history, many, many books on this in the 19th and 20th centuries.

At a guess this is the 7th thread on HP on the topic, so it could have been added onto an existing thread. Try the search facility here. On the whole opinions always seem mixed - half "for" and half find it too focussed on materialism, to which I agree.

The title was meant to be intriguing, glad you picked up on that.

I also mentioned this was a marketing ploy.

I did also search before posting this. The subjects that came up in the results were UFOs, who killed? JFK, Diana, Dr Kelly, Bambi (joking) and loads of conspiracy stuff. There's a lot of secrets out there!

Interesting a Budhist using sarcasm and putting down other human beings, religion at its best!

The film/book does cover world peace and poverty, but concentrating on what they want not what they don't want.

The entire concept of the law of attraction is that there is abundance in everything, if you look for the positive in everything. If you look to stop wars, poverty, etc. wars and poverty get the energy.

It surprises me that so many see wealth as MONEY, concepts are expressed as one example and not just an example of a concept. Spiritual people stating that they're more spiritual than others. Wow, isn't this interesting.

Not saying I agree with every word, or with the tone, entirely, but I just stumbled upon this view on The "Secret":

I think they concentrated more on wealth since its what most people struggle with......i don't use their concept in wealth but i thought it made sense
