perhaps one should not be so disparaging about Indian 'pseudo-science' re 2012 - here is an article from our own Sunday Times dated 12th January 2003 :
Holes at Pole signal a big magnetic flip - Jonathan Leake, Environment Editor
The North Pole is on the move. Scientists have found large holes in the Earth's magnetic field, suggesting that the north and south poles are preparing to reverse positions in a magnetic flip.
A period of chaos could be approaching, when compasses no longer point north, migrating animals take the wrong direction and satellites are burnt up by solar radiation.
The holes lie over the South Atlantic and the Arctic. The changes were revealed after detailed data from the Danish Orsted satellite was analysed. Results were compared with data from earlier satellites.
The speed of the change has suprised scientists. Nils Olsen, of the Center for Planetary Science in Denmark, one of several centres analysing the data, said the Earth's core apperaed to be undergoing dramatic changes. He added: "This could be the state in which the Earth's geodynamo operated before reversing."
The geodynamo is the way the magnetic field is generated: by currents of molten iron flowing around a solid core. Sometimes giant votices form in the liquid metal and they can change or even reverse the magnetic fields above them.
Olsen's team believes vortices have formed beneath the North Pole and South Atlantic. If they become powerful enough they could reverse all the other currents, causing the north and south poles to switch places.
Dr Andy Jackson, a specialist in geomagnetism at Leeds University, said a change was long overdue: "Such flips normally happen every 500,000 years but it has been 750,000 years since the last one.
The change could affect both humans and wildlife. The magnetosphere gives vital protection against searing solar radiation that would otherwise sterilise Earth. Although the magnestic field would probably not disappear altogether, it might weaken while the poles switched, resulting in a surge of radiation that could cause cancers, reduce crops and confuse migrating animals from whales to pigeons.
For scientists the big question is not whether but when the changeover will happen. Some say it could be soon while others say it could be any time in the next 1,000 years.
In my opinion the article is very restrained when forecasting the likely effects of such a changeover!

mmmmmmm....
a change of direction is as good as the rest

Hi Doq,
I'm not disparaging at all about esoteric or paranormal things in general, and have recently been in debate against a sceptic in the Science forum over how long man has been around etc. But I don't swallow all uncritically (not meaning by that that you do either).

I know the magnetic poles are shifting. My comment was that there's no relationship between that and any particular date scientifically. I mean it is happening in 2005 for example. Knowing how the Indian press work, they pulled "2012" out of a hat to relate it all to, but it's not science. That was journalism.
I then commented that nothing of this nature, pole shifts etc., can possibly effect asteriods!! - nor the gravity of the Earth as that is an effect of mass, not magnetism. So yes, I was saying that the Indian Press article was getting into psuedo-science, but the pole wobbling is real.
The poles have reversed before, should that be what is on the cards. Or perhaps they are righting themselves, not reversing, which would presumably be a positive, good thing. However, when they did reverse in the past it clearly did not sterilise the Earth of life, did it? It has happened many times in the distant past. Though were it to happen it would give rise to a number of negative effects for a period, yes.
It's quite incredible that this latest quote is from The Sunday Times?? The editor writes that a pole reversal would mean, "satellites are burnt up by solar radiation". What's he talking about?:D Satellites are almost all right outside Earth's protective magnetic envelope anyway! They are already in space by definition. They don't get burned up at all - that only happens to one specifically observing the sun at a time of intense solar flares, which are not much connected if at all to our poles. So that's simply untrue, and therefore one has to realise that the rest of it isn't necessarily very hard science either. (Surprising to find that in the S Times, though...)

On 2012 in general, if consciousness is changing it would be nice to think that it is happening by free will and happeing right now in 2005, and that it will continue to occur by free will and self-growth after 2012, rather than our being passive beings manipulated by dates, which I don't totally hold to. Our past (?) HP member, the astrology expert, astra, once posted a lovely (hilarious) link to a list of all the things predicted to happen in 2012. Basically the various ideas all oppose each other which forces one to step back and become a bit careful if not cynical; e.g. consciousness change, or everyone collected by UFOs, or the end of the world, a shift through a "star gate" into "another dimension". Etc., etc. I'd say 2012 is - the London Olympics. 😉

" attract large asteroids to earth".....is that before or after the daleks invade ?? .... less science fiction and more facts would be nice....,

I know, these articles make me boggle as well, but I don't want to shy away from considering the whole area by rejecting the lot over one point. Reporting in newspapers is usually non-technical, and I am certainly a total ignoramus in astrology and geophysics - however, as we have such a large number of asteroids and regular "near misses", is it possible that a pole reversal of the Sun (the Indian press article referred to reversal occurring to the Sun as well as Earth) may have a subtle effect on asteroid trajectories, leading to more collisions?
Regarding current day 'Mayans' - aren't these a pale shadow of the former Mayan civilisation? It would be interesting to see the press release you mention.

The wandering magnetic north pole is a regular feature and no big news in itself, I agree - however, the salient fact from the article was the degree of wandering which is currently happening, which is apparently unusual.
It is the concept of pole reversal which is the interesting. I gather that geologists can detect the polarity state from rock strata, and I have seen reports alleging that evidence for a number of reversals have been detected.
However, when they did reverse in the past it clearly did not sterilise the Earth of life, did it?
I wouldn't be quite so sure of that - the history of life on this planet has many episodes of 'mass extinctions' - but there are always going to be some places where the radiation flare does not penetrate, and subsequently Life returns gradually, albeit with different forms becoming dominant.
It's quite incredible that this latest quote is from The Sunday Times?? The editor writes that a pole reversal would mean, "satellites are burnt up by solar radiation". What's he talking about? Satellites are almost all right outside Earth's protective magnetic envelope anyway! They are already in space by definition. I did not take this to mean burned up as in "vaporised by heat" - but more an extension of the well-known effects of sun spot activity which affect the functioning of communication satellites - and in the more extreme scenario being discussed, could not circuits be burned out rendering the satellite useless?
I agree with you about specific dates being misleading in this field - when talking about an event which is 250,000 years overdue according to the S Times article, the odd 1000 years is a drop in the ocean!
We live in interesting times, indeed.
