RE: Spirituality and Vegetarianism

I agree with all the above posts - or rather, I agree that each are entitled to their own diverse opinions, as the posts differ! I also put thought into my diet, however there's one thing I notice about the veggie or vegan or meat or fish-only kind of subjects which crops up not just on HP by any means, but often elsewhere when the subject comes up. That's fanaticism! (And I don't mean that personally to anyone here whatsoever.)

Jesus said (quoting from memory), "It is more important what comes out of a man's mouth than what goes in." That is, the consciousness as expressed in speech (which gives the thoughts away) is far more important than any dietary consideration. I've known plenty of people who were veggie or vegan, but not only inordinately 'proud' of it, but also had disdain toward others, and actually didn't seem to be spiritual people in reality at all. They neglect true spiritual works, and spend 5 hours a day preparing their special food! 😀 So, given the thread title, you can be spiritual and eat anything, and vegetarianism doesn't mean a person is 'spiritual'.

So that's just another angle to all this I'd raise.

It is quite amazing but perhaps a bit humourous at times too: you can tend to get more contention on a veggie forum than on one where the differing religions meet and dialogue! [&o]

I think fanaticism is summed up in the occasional posts on another forum I'm on. The forum subject is Theosophy, but out of the blue, in response to no-one (!), a guy from India posts every few months with a total diatribe against meat-eaters, and goes so far as to say it is worse to kill animals than to kill people!

So I thought I'd share this thought. I suppose the moral is to be accomodating to all other persuasions. And some peoples' bodies do need different diets - there are no blanket rules IMHO.

RE: Spirituality and Vegetarianism

Hello,
I am 26 & gave up eating red & white meat when I was about 12. I gave up eating fish about 6 years ago. I could never eat meat that looked like an animal, from the bone or with skin or scales...[:'(] I was more of a processed meat girl as a child (if there's any meat in anything processed!?!)
Anyway, I like to think of myself as a spiritual person but do not practise anything regularly. All my family are meat eaters. I think this is just personal preference for me and I could never imagine myself eating meat again. I love animals too much and do think of them as suffering and in pain if I see raw meat - it makes me feel very sad, so perhaps there is something in the vibrations of the meat?
I'm not sure if any other vegetarians agree but since not eating meat, my whole sense of taste and smell has changed and burgers/kebabs no longer smell attractive, not even after a night on the tiles!
I also get annoyed at the vegetarians eat fish thing. Its great that everyone can choose their own diets, I'm all up for freedom of choice! but this does make things difficult for caterers and us vegetarians that don't do fish! My friend eats only veg & fish, she calls herself a veggi-quarian which I think denotes the difference rather well!

veggi-quarian

I like that. 😀 If only it would catch on globally it would clarify things.

I guess this is off-topic strictly speaking, but the whole veggie issue seems to discussed in this thread anyway! - I must live in an alternate universe as I've never had anyone think that I'd eat fish when I say I'm veggie.

My own personal bug-a-boo on being veggie is simply concerning some airlines. Vegetarian meals on some can be fine ... well, as good as airline food gets that is. But how about when you order a veggie meal, you do get hungry, everyone else is served something very substantial and you get a bread roll with some green leaves? [:@]

Well.. I'm a newbie.. but still have to put my bit in here.
I eat meat. I love homekill most. I don't eat much meat - it's cheaper to eat legumes and veges, but I do eat meat when I can.

I also think I'm Spiritual. And I started this path openly at age 12, so I'm not that 'new' to the path. I'm also third generation - My grandmother was psychic and my mother is also. I might not have their talent (or maybe I do, just don't like being egotistical). They both ate (or eat) meat and always did.

I personally don't think people should feel that the higher their spiritual awareness the less likely they should eat meat. I actually think that's slightly arrogant.

Sorry to be rude.

Yuk! It takes all sorts. [:-]

Pax, it doesn't matter what you eat as long as you follow your own path. I personally do feel lighter in all areas of my life since I gave up meat, but that is my personal path, not arrogance.

Much love Antari
