Ithar is right... names are sometimes seen as a waste of energy better spent communicating. You say the smell you get reminds you of your Mum... see how much faster and more direct that is than labouring over a title, however loving?
Also, the thought occurs that your visitors may come as a group energy rather than individuals. I'm suggesting this because of late, my visitors have been coming in sharp bursts; sometimes it feels like my Mum, other times like spirit friends... but the overall energy is the same - as if they all come together in the same 'cloud' (or vibration) and briefly separate into individuals to let me recognise them.
Think of a telephone line with lots of links off it... one end to you, the other to an exchange in the spirit realms. One strong person makes the call and the others butt in on the other phones, part of the overall conversation and listening in!
Actually, that scenario was just suggested to me by my friends... simple ones are best!

Im glad I recieve names from spirit as it helps me to pass messages on;), I like to know who Im working with, but that just me.
I gave my guide a pet name at one time, but then out of the blue oneday , he told me his real name and where he was from while on the earth plain etc.. I also recieved a picture of him from across the seas to confirm what I had always know and seen. I still call him by his pet name, but with repect for him I know his real name.
Remember I am just one of many and this is just my own experience.
When I was on my road of discovery many years ago I attened many session at place were mediums were and as I look up I would see whom was working with them, at the end of the evening I would tell about the experience I had. It was always a welcomming comfirmation to them, and a teaching for me.
When it's my time to crossover and settled in spirit world, I like to say, "Hey Elvis let's rock:D"

I do occasionally receive visits from someone very, very close (not a family member though) to me.
I remember the first encounter I had with him. I felt physically enveloped by his spirit form. It was very powerful, an experience I will remember for as long as I live. 🙂

When I am doing a consultaion and clearing, I often get people who have not passed over, I ask them if there is a essage they would like to pass on, and then send this message to the person. I do not sign my name I post it anominously (typo) Then in most cases they pass over.
