RE: Soul Healing

Sorry for butting in here but I very recently heard about something called soul retrieval and wondered if this could also be what people refer to as soul healing? The following is from a website I found while browsing.

www.worldtrans.org/TP/TP1/TP1-111.HTML

"Soul Retrieval is the recovery of parts of the person that she left or lost somewhere, or that were stolen or borrowed by somebody else. The objective is to make the person more whole and more present.

The idea of Soul Retrieval originates in ancient shamanic practices. American Indians would do it in drumming ceremonies where the shaman would travel off into the past or into alternate realities and find the part of the person that was missing and invite it to come back.

People are basically whole, they inherently have all the qualities they need. If they appear otherwise it is generally because they are split up somehow. If the client has "lost her confidence" it is there somewhere. The "confidence" is not just non-existent. It might exist 30 years ago at the bottom of a closet, asleep, but it is somewhere to be found."

First of all I thought the implication was that the soul was fragmented, but having read through again I think it means the person has become fragmented. I would be interested to know what people think of the above.

Hi Moonfeather,

Spirit is everything that is or could be. Your spirit is that bit of everything that you are.

Sandra,

To repond to your question:

"Soul Retrieval is the recovery of parts of the person that she left or lost somewhere, or that were stolen or borrowed by somebody else. The objective is to make the person more whole and more present.

No one can take a part of you that you do not give. You can create emotional ties to someone who may then die, betray your confidence, or feed off of your energy, but you have given them tacit permission in some way. (You can also sever those "emotional ties" very easily.) Also, there are emotional responses (pieces of yourself) that you have left behind by decision and that you no longer need. We have a picture on our wall that says, "It's easier to see the sunlight without them." You are still fully whole without them and actually healthier.

I totally agree with this idea of wholeness. The shaman's action is a demonstration of assurance in the same way that you open the cupboard or look under the bed to assure your child that there are no monsters.

Beyond that, however, is the fact that we sometimes encounter situations that we are not ready or able to deal with. My friend's multiple personalities were developed because at the point of severe sexual abuse she was not able to handle it mentally and created a new "person" who took over from that point--totally leaving the experience and the memory of it behind her. It was not until she was much older and in a place that she could begin to resolve the emotions that accompanied the abuse that she was able to see the many aspects of herself. It did not happen overnight, but when she was able to love each of those personae and accept them she was able to become "one" again.

No one else was able to do this for her. It had to be her own expression of Love for herself, but that Love can be modeled by a shaman or anyone else willing to put themselves in that position.

When we depend upon someone else to do our work for us we abandon the responsibility for our own development. In the case cited above, the shaman actually "did" nothing but provide an opportunity for the woman to regain her confidence by herself. If it did not "return," s/he could say that it (the confidence) refused the invitation, thereby absolving the woman of her responsibility to change her response and "find" it. If the woman regained the confidence by her own actions, then the confidence accepted the invitation to return. (True, but the actual invitation was the woman's own willingness.)

Any psychologist, psychiatrist, clergy, shaman, or counselor of any kind will tell you that it is not what "they" do but the work that the individual does that makes a difference. They can only set the stage for change by accepting the client as they are.
