Hello Everyone,
I have been perusing the forum and was delighted to come upon this thread. Your conversations are intelligent and enlightening and I would like to share my thoughts if I may. I am a freelance research writer and this is one area that I am particularly involved. I won't go into too much detail here for now, but if there is an interest I would be glad to add more as we go along.
Because this topic is wide open to conjecture and personal experience, there can be no cut and dried answer that would fit into everyone's general criteria and thought process. We are all different. That's what makes this area of the psyche so interesting. At any rate, I hope you find the following titillating, at best, food for more great conversation and observation. Hopefully I will not repeat too much of what has already been said.
Spirit guides are chosen by us before we incarnate into the earth plane. And often times they have been with us in previous lives. In the interest of brevity, let me just list the four basic guides that work with us all the time. Their meanings are self-explanatory, but it may be fun sometime to define each one, as we each see the differences.
1. Protector Guide
2. Joy Guide
3. Chemist or Doctor Guide
4. Teacher Guide
Basically these guides are here to keep us on track so we are able to complete our life plan, and through meditation or a higher thought process do these guides appear. And keep in mind our guides love us very much and want the best for us. We just have to open up to them; that sometimes is the difficult part. I have found a wonderful meditative process that works for me and if you wish I could elaborate further at some other time.
In the meantime, I hope this will evoke some great conversation on this fascinating phenomenon. Take care.
Yours in peace,
oystermoon
RE: Meeting Our Spirit Guides
Hi Oystermoon
Welcome to the forum!
I agree that we have guides that perform the specific functions you ascribe to them, though I don't think its that cut and dried.
Personally, I have two clear guides who are very definite protectors, though one of them additionally lightens me up when I get too serious (along with others who make me laugh but who also have additional messages)
I also have a teacher guide, who additionally gives me 'nutrition' in the form of a soup when she thinks I need it, so I guess that would include the 'doctor' guide
There are also very many other guides who are there for specific reasons relating to the position I am at the moment, and upon whose behalf I am working.
Guides step in as and when we need them - do we need to put them in boxes? I've sort of managed it for some of them but I don't see the point
Whoops- sorry, not trying to be confrontational.

Hi Mab,
thanks for your welcome...
Maybe you misunderstood me, because I, too said that this whole business of spirit guides is NOT cut and dried. And I'm not sure where you think I made the inference that we could put all of this in a tidy little box...this segue to the inner spirit is too involved for that...so I never said that at all either.

RE: Meeting Our Spirit Guides
Hi Oyster Moon, glad you're enjoying the forums... this is a great place to debate and exchange ideas/experiences, isn't it?
Re: guides... like you, I've found that there are so many entering and leaving our lives that it can be difficult keeping track of them! I often refer to my spirit friends as my 'team'. I have my healing team, my communication team, my art team... They often have specific tasks, just as you have indicated with your basic titles. I know who comes along to lift the energies (my joy guide), for example. Recently, I found out that my main teacher has three aspects - male teacher, female teacher/healer and male protector! It can be strange, picking up on one dominant energy while feeling the others close by in the mingling...
I sometimes smile when a person asks 'how do I meet my guide'? The impulse is to ask - which one? 😉
Something else I find fascinating is that they learn through us, also, so it's a two-way thing. We should never feel 'honoured' or 'lesser' when measured against our guides' advanced knowledge... like attracts like and they would not work with us unless we were equals. It's just our turn to be here, that's all!
Blessings

Hi Otter,[sm=wave.gif]
It's so nice to meet you and thanks for your great reply. Yes, as you say our guides are there for us as we need them. And each of us has different guides, depending on our particular situations and interests; it could be a myriad of any one of them to see us through our lives, and through various times when we need that extra nudge to see us through.;)
Again, thanks for stopping by; come back soon.[sm=hug.gif] Have a great Sunday!
hugs,
