RE: Himalayas

Then there is THAT rope bridge. Don't even ask me about it. It hadn't been tried in years. When I started over it (rapids below) people lined up on the far side to watch the show.

One conveyed a message to me by running his hand across his throat. But the fact is I was less scared of going forward than going back!

RE: Himalayas

Also on the subject of the Himalayas, what a great pity - Nepal used to be a haven of utter peace, and is the inroad or way to much of the range. Alas, I hear the civil war is heightening there and it's pretty dodgy these days. Maybe less so for tourists than the locals actually: more people per head disappear in Nepal now than in Columbia. The Maoist rebels take people to force them to join them, and the police disappear suspects off the streets to quietly do them in.

So far the worst I've heard of is that, for tourists I mean, the rebels may intercept you and demand money to carry on - and it can be a lot. Best to really hide what you have somewhere on your person and offer maybe $100. Or - maybe the Nepalese Himalayas need to by bypassed for now. Such a pity.
