The Himalayas. Has anyone else on HP been there? I mean, not on a quick tourist trip?
It is many a year since I was there, but I am feeling the call, not an urgent one, but one I will fulfill, to get back. Has anyone else been there for I would like to share thoughts and memories.
The most vivid recollection I have is not of some dramatic climb, but of a view I once had when all the air cleared and you could see for about 700-800 miles. You could see the curvature of the Earth. The whole horizon was curved. You could see the entire Himalayan range. I was transfixed.
I hear that the great adventurer, Ran Fiennes, is about to go there to climb Everest from a difficult face. LOL, for he actually has a fear of heights!
But has anyone else spent time there?

RE: Himalayas
Hi Venetian
I have not been there, but ever since i was a wee lad, i have always wanted to climb it, it was always an ambition of mine and would love to fulfill my dream one day.
My dentis has been there and has a 360 degree panoramic picture in his surgery and i always feel mesmerised by it, btw he also spent 3 months in antartica climbing a few years back, again some wonderful views.
I have a calling to go, and when the time is right the opportunity will arrive at my feet (pardon the pun). I went to school with Chris Bonningtons son and had the pleasure of meeting the man, from what i remember as it was a few years ago, he was very charismatic and a pleasure to talk to.

RE: Himalayas
Hi David
Your post has rung bells because I'm just back from Rishikesh and while there took a taxi ride into the mountains. We turned a bend and there in the distance was a tiny section of the High Himalayas shining like a diamond in the sunshine. I've only ever seen the Himalayas from a distance, never actually been there, but I would agree that there is something truly magical about them. Incidentally I learned that 'Sunanda Devi' was the sister of the wonderful mountain, Ananda Devi, of which I had a wonderful view when I stayed at a place called Almora. Actually Almora was the nearest town, I stayed further up at a place called Kasar Devi, where Vivekananda used to meditate. (I was awoken one morning by the village band preparing for a wedding procession. Two or three members were playing bagpipes!!!
Much love

Venetion
Oh, it is my big wish to visit 'Kailash' (mount Kailash) and Maan-sarover. Last month, when I was in India, I visited some holy places in southern and western part of that country. And at that time, we (me and my friends) decided to visit above mentioned two places.
I am praying Lord Shiva to fulfil my wish.
Thanks

RE: Himalayas
I have not been there for so long. It was totally third world in my last visit. I could not even find a common pigeon language with Nepalese. So can anyone tell me today - how do they go to the loo?
The reason I ask is that I had the s*** there, every 30 minutes. Once it started and I had 60 seconds and that was it .:D I was on a mountain-top, but there was actually a whole village on its top and people everywhere. I had only 60 secs, so ran to the edge of the mountain. There was a 3000 foot drop (which I had just climbed) to look down to. And a little scrawny tree sticking out. Confession coming up: I grabbed the tree, which put me out of sight of people, and dropped my trousers as I hung out of sight over the edge. I trust no-one was directly below! But the tiny tree started coming out of its roots!
I have often thought, what a way to go - trouserless falling 3000 feet for that reason!
I guess today people do more pigeon English.
