RE: Daft Question, maybe... what IS spirituality?

Hi again Darren,

It's interesting that this topic has come up again as I came across a sentence by Mary Baker Eddy a couple of days ago which just summed it all up for me and thought "Oh, that would be perfect for that thread" and here it is this morning.

I love Naru's and EnergyatWork's definitions in particular.

This is the one for me:

"The calm, strong currents of true spirituality, the manifestations of which are health, purity, and self-immolation, must deepen human experience, until the beliefs of material existence are seen to be a bald imposition, and sin, disease, and death give everlasting place to the scientific demonstration of divine Spirit and to God's spiritual, perfect man." (Science and Health p 99)

(By the way, before anyone here starts bristling at the word sin - it is simply whatever perpetrates the belief of duality, while we are, in reality, one with Spirit.)

Lov and peace,

Judy

I shan't bristle Judy:D at that word, I believe there is 'sin' or definitions of such, and it has been around since mankind first walked the earth and began to have some sense of right and wrong.

"......spirituality is not a high intellectuality, not idealism, not an ethical turn of mind or moral purity and austerity, not religiosity or an ardent and exalted emotional fervour, not even a compound of all these excellent things; a mental belief, creed or faith, an emotional aspiration, a regulation of conduct according to a religious or ethical formula are not spiritual achievement and experience.
These things are of considerable value to mind and life; they are of value to the spiritual evolution itself as preparatory movements disciplining, purifying or giving a suitable form to the nature; but they still belong to the mental evolution,—the beginning of a spiritual realisation, experience, change is not yet there

Naru's copied part of Sri Aurobindo's thoughts are closest to my heart.

The next is a wonderful friend of mine in the States, who, when asked about the meaning of the word 'spirituality' answered,

"It just IS, You just ARE, look above that which you see from day to day, and it surrounds you".

Love Gxxxxxxxxx

I consider spirituality to be what's within your heart & spirit.

It is striving to be all you can here before you go home.
To give without expecting anything in return,
To love how you want to be loved,
To do all you can for the planet,
To give thanks to the creator,
To leave ego at the front door,
To look above at the sky and to feel a huge amount of love engulfing you, knowing there is more out there.
To live in the NOW.
To be open to all beliefs.

That's some of how I see spirituality.

How about...

That it differs from being moral and it differs from 'merely' being good?

It is the realisation that what we can easily think of as being our whole and true self as a human being is not the whole at all? That we have a relationship with a higher being some called God? And that this relationship is important?

Along with that, as no doubt I have indicated before 😀 , to be psychic is not 'spiritual' as such IMHO as psychicism is a mere neutral ability such as being good at maths or a good athlete. It's merely an ability. It is clearly misused in some cases. But not to get sidetracked into that subject, spirituality is about the relationship between the individual and God?

P.S. I'd say atheists can be spiritual too, for they just may not quite grasp that their good heartedness (if they have such, and many do) is also truly derived from God?

A very good question
But I say what is spiritual to you and in that what counts
For what’s spiritual is what its means to you

But for me I cant put it in to words it’s a way of being and even when I say im a nut in all the energies that come and say hello and all its up to me what I call it I say its spiritual but its just the way I am and if I call it spiritual I know I am not nuts ha ha
If you follow a religion or a practice and call it spiritual who am I argue for most people would call me a nut for what I do but I call it spiritual and is a good label so I call the nutty bus to come and pick me up “no im spiritual” so that’s all right
Call of the buss ha ha

Have fun and party hard in all your beliefs and notice all that your labels justify the way you be

Ill shut up and have another drink

Love to all brent
