Arrgghhhh!
Can anyone help me please. I am after a good and reliable yoga teaching training course which will be affordable for my budget especailly as I am a single parent & a teaching assistant.
I have been going to yoga classes for about 7 years and I am so ready to train up as a teacher.
Boy! Some of these companies are asking for the earth with their prices including the deposit they require. They are not really considering us single mums or low wage earners, who would love to better ourselves especailly those who really do not have family members rich enough to help. (God I'm really on my soap box here-sorry!) It is just I have been trailling through all the websites from BWY -yoga alliance for the last 2 weeks hoping to get a good deal.
I have been on BSY website but to be honest I would prefer the hands on approach that home study do not offer.
I also understand that most courses require a pre-course requirement of the foundation before embarking onto a teacher course in which I don't mind, but again £££££££££££££££££'s.
Has anyone had the similar headache as me? :banghead:

Please resist the urge to do a home study course. You need hands on experience, and lots of it, plus good feedback on your technique, adjustments and knowledge, to be a good teacher. This is why the good courses are expensive. There are cheaper courses out there, but you get what you pay for. If you want to develop into a good teacher, then it may be worth saving up to do the right course. Good luck.

Thanks for your advice YogaCatherine.
I have been making lots of enquires and so far Yoga Junction seems really appealing. They offer the BWY Foundation course to start off with. Yes I have been browsing the home study courses but with the impression of not being quite reputable as I would rather the hands on experience etc.
May I ask? Would you be a yoga teacher yourself?

Yoga and meditation India travel packages

The birth of yoga took place in India. Yoga is considered the final cure for many diseases, and is the best you can do to your body. It actually means moving the energy of the body in the right direction. Thus, when you come to India through India Holiday packages and India Tour packages, do not forget visiting those destinations, which are a yoga hub in India.
Rishikesh is a major hub for meditation and yoga. The peaceful suburbs of the place give it the advantage of being a yoga hub. International Yoga week is also celebrated every year in Rishikesh, which attracts a large number of foreigners every year.

Thus, get hold of your India Travel agency or your India Travel agent to form Yoga India Holiday package for you and your family.

Just to be boringly practical 🙁

The main reason that yoga teaching courses are so expensive is that it is a double whammy for the company. Not only are you likely to stop attending yoga classes ( hopefully you will be too busy running your own!) but also you will be effectively setting up in competition, reducing their earnings potential.

I know it is tough when you are on low wages, but if this is something that you are truly meant to do then the money will fall into place somehow.

Good luck anyway, I hope you get your wish. 🙂

I googled yoga teaching courses after reading this thread and most of them seem to be £500-£600. That sounds very reasonable to me. The problem is that the people running the courses have to make money and the courses are not government/welfare susidised like, for example, a book keeping course might be. I don't really think the schools are the problem, more the "system".

I recommended a friend of mine to the hypnotherapy school that I trained at. She paid for the first module which at the time was about £500, told the job centre that she wasn't available to sign on as she was at a course and that was ok. When she then booked to go on the 2nd module at a further £500 cost to her, the job centre told her that as the course wasn't a government recognised course and she had already signed once to say that she couldn't sign on due to being on a course, she would have to sign off and then re-apply for benefits after the course! The system is the problem, not the schools! Yes, you want to better yourself but it's not really fair to do so at someone else's expense! Estimate (realistically, premises alone can cost an arm and a leg nowadays) their overheads and then work out how they can afford to discount below that price and still make money.

Not having a dig at you, just this crap government/the system!

£500-£600 for a Yoga course, that is more that reasonable, that is very cheap. What did you Google on? I sure others here will be interested to know where they are. Mine cost just under £1700 a few years ago!

I don't remember now. I just quickly googled Yoga Teaching Course and sifted through a few until I found prices. I felt I couldn't really comment on the thread until I had some idea of the price. If i remember correctly, I found 4 or 5 around about the prices I quoted.

Hi Bannick

Thanks for responding

Just a a quick Google sear and yes there are yoga courses in the region of about £500-£600, but the one or two that I found are corrospondense courses- usefull those who have a grasp or want to get a grasp on learning about Yoga and deepening ones understanding. But not practical, hands on stuff. I have found (and I have looked over the past two years) tha most sites never divulge the actual cost first hand, you tend contact them or download the application before getting the true cost. I had to email a couple of places to get a price and it was in access of £1800!

The ones I looked at didn't appear to be distance learning courses and I completely agree with you about distance learning courses, within my therapy (hypnotherapy) I don't believe it can be learnt effectively without real "hands on" practice. I was merely looking for a guideline price. Even at £1800, my original post stands. I think it's for government to offer subsidies for training from commercial organisations, not just from colleges etc rather than for the schools themselves to lower their prices.

I believe you get what you pay for. My main training cost me £1500 (I've done further courses since, mainly for CPD), I could have done it for £400 through a distance learning course and a therapist a couple of miles from me did the latter. I pick up his dissatisfied clients regularly, he doesn't have the experience or training to help them effectively. It's a shame as I'm sure he puts many people of the therapy completely rather than causing them to seek out a properly trained therapist.

Think I found a Ruth White course, £120 registration and £95 per module - 6 modules?! Still searching for that £500-£600 price bracket though, if you do come across it let me know. I'm looking to add to my training.

Can I just say that the BWY does subsidise some students, and may be worth checking that out. Also, although the class may be expensive, you receive great knowledge and a huge learning curve over the 2.5 -3 years of the course. In addition, in a class situation, you get a lot of love and support from your classmates, plus time to fully grasp all the concepts in the curriculum.

Look around and find the right teacher for you, that is really important as there are some phenomenal teachers and some below par ones. Correspondence does not give you what you need to become the best teacher you can be...
Good luck in your journey.....
