Hello

I bought myself a DVD and done my first yoga session today, felt really really good after it 🙂

All I need now is a good Yoga Mat, any recommendations as there seems to be loads out there?

Thanks

Nameste SunnyStar

Glad to know that you enjoyed your first yoga session, Yoga is a great journey..

Mats - there are so many!! You may want to just buy one and see how it goes. Sticky mats are always useful. I've got a couple - I've found that they're great for the summer when you want to practice outside.. PM if you want to know of a couple of good yoga websites that sell a wide range mats.

Also, if you're going to the Yoga Show then I'm sure they will be selling mats there as well

hope this helps

I have a warrior mat, but have sincecome to the conclusion that funnily enough, the thinner the mat, better. They just seem to be stickier, and less likely to slip.

RE: Which Yoga Mat?

Hi SunnyStar

If funds are tight ASDA do one for just under £5. If you are practicing at home then your carpet (depending on what it is made of) will probably be fine or laminate flooring (unless you get quite sweaty) , or you could try a long cotton rug (the sort that is referred to as a 'runner' as it's long and thin). The important thing is that whatever you practice on should give you a good grip so that you do not slip and be long enough so when you are standing in a stride postion or with hands and feet on the floor they are all on the mat. The mat is important for standing postures where the feet are apart (or feet and hands in the case of downward dog for instance) but not usually necessary for floor based exercises such as seated forward bends etc as slipping is unlikely.

If you have the cash then invest in a good mat and think of the eco variety (although I have had my mat 20 years and it is still going strong and that was a pale blue BWY mat which was all you could get at the time so you could argue it was ecological as it has lasted so well!).

Good luck and enjoy your practice.

Hi SunnyStar,

Just found your posting....by now the mat is probably sorted. I like the sticky ones. Are you enjoying your yoga? There are some great DVDs out there for enjoying a routine at home. I go to a lesson once a week and try to put on a DVD at least once a week.

The world of yoga is enormous and I am sure you will enjoy and find something that suits you down to the ground. I think Wand is a good example ....20 years! I hope to say the same one day (about 18 years from now...)

My experience with yoga mats

I never used to think that your yoga mat was that important.I always used to think that it was just a load of hype designed by yoga companies to make money. I changed my mind when I got my first ever (and probably last ever as they come with a lifetime gaurantee!) Manduka mat.

You guys should really check them out. My teacher got me on to them - they are an american brand that have just become available in the UK with . Anyway ... they are like no other and bring real quality to your practice.

I now feel that quality runs through my whole practice right down to what is between me and the earth.

I tried one of those eco mats that are made of Jute - although good for the environment they are really not very good for your skin. Talk about carpet burn - man they are rough!:)
