Hi all

I suffer from bad back pain after a car crash and also IBS, can anybody tell me if there is a specific type of yoga which would be better for me than the rest? I found a dvd which has good reviews on kundalini yoga, would this be suitable?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

i got a dvd by Gary Kraftstow from yogamatters, yoga for back pain relief that saved my back after a spasm earlier this year. As a yoga teacher myself, I learnt a lot from this back pain and it filters through to my classes. My teacher tells me all yoga is good for back pain, but it must be practiced with true mindfulness in all that you do in class. Connect deeply with your body and movefrom this point. Good luck! 🙂

I would recommend viniyoga. It has certainly helped me, though my situation of course was different. See my 'viniyoga' thread!

Hi Mikey
There is a raft of postures in yoga that claim to be good for the back but I have always found that it is best not to focus just on the offending part of the anatomy. Do some careful general yoga to bring extension into the whole body and strengthen the muscle groups around the back (if its lumbar) such as the thighs, the buttocks, the upper back and the core.
If you also include a number of "back" postures a good way forward is to be sure to practice them in such a way that does not bring pain.
If you work "through" pain it can often irritate the problem and you might feel that your progress is slow.
Consult an understanding yoga teacher for more guidance.

p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } Yoga styles such as Kundalini, Ashtanga and Bikram are challenging and not a good choice for back pain sufferers. Viniyoga is effective for back pain. It may include asana, pranayama and meditation.
