Hello, I'm new here.
I have been having some bleeding after sex so the doctor suggested I have some tests done. 2 1/2 years ago I had a smear but was in counselling at the time and took 4mg of diazepam which made me feel chilled and coped ok.
This time I had to have a few things done and the doctor wanted another doctor (both female) in the room to make sure everything was done right first time so no recalls, which delayed it another week and made it worse for me. She knew I was anxious so prescribed diazepam again. Its not embarressment or fear of pain, Its almost violating and traumatic for me.
I was very emotional and took 6mg by the time of the appointment but they did not help at all. I was crying and shaking and went through with it because I could not handle another delay. She was very understanding and spoke to me before and during. They had trouble seeing my womb apparently and kept moving the speculam and eventually pulled it out and started again. It made me quite sore after and they told me I had bled a little. I know something traumatic must have happened in my past though counselling never helped me reach what happened. I had emotional and physical abuse when I was a child but no real memeories of anything else, just hints.
I was a mess all yesterday and cried most of the day.
If I need any further treatment/tests I'm not sure I can take anymore. I get the results in three weeks. There was mention of maybe an ultrasound which I can do if its not internal.
Can these things be done under general anaestetic? I know it seems extreeme but I cannot make it through another experience like that. Is there something stronger I can take? I know its important and I'm only doing this for my husband as I wouldn't want him to worry about me having something I could have prevented but he doesn't like seeing me as distressed as I was yesterday (that was 10 hours after)
Sorry to go on, I really need some help. Thanx!
Hiya
I'm sorry to read of your problems. It must be very traumatising for you. I could suggest a couple of things:
Firstly, if you have tests done at the hospital you could have a general anaesthetic. I had an anaesthetic intravenously when I had a gastroscopy. Hospitals have access to a lot more drugs than GPs seem to.
Secondly, I wonder if hypnotherapy could help? I'm thinking that a good hypnotherapist would be able to teach you how to self-hypnotise in this situation. Might be worth either getting a doctor's referral or going private.
Hope this helps
Hello Chris, I did learn some NLP and relaxation techniques in counselling and anxiety management but I couldn't even picture somehwere nice yesterday. Normally I can override pain through power of mind. I've has hypno suggested to find out what happened too but I believe the mind knows when its ready.
I will ask what can be done to knock me out to keep my mind safe next time.
Thanx for the advice.
Hi
So sorry to hear how distressed you are about examinations, I am so glad that your doctor is so sympathetic and understanding, that at least helps a little.
I wonder if you could be referred for pyschotherapy as opposed to counselling, to help you come to terms with the trauma you suffered when you were younger. I think it would probably be available on the NHS if your dr could refer you.
As for further examinations/tests, firstly try and think for the moment that the results may come back clear and you may not need any further tests, at least for a few years anyway. If you DO have to have more tests then these are quite likely to be carried out in hospital, and like Chris said the drs there have access to more drugs. It may be possible to have IV sedation for these tests, where they give you a sedative drug such as midazolam through a cannula in your hand which makes you feel drowsy and relaxed. This is what they do with people having procedures such as wisdom tooth extraction, so it definitely works and will have a much stronger effect than oral diazepam. It is definitely worth asking if it is available if you need to have more tests done.
Sending you (((hugs))) it may not feel like it at the moment but it just shows how strong you are that you managed to get through the examination however awful it made you feel

Thank you for your kind response. I'm not overly worried about there being anything seriously wrong but I guess something is causing the bleeding, hopefully it will all be ok. Its reassuring to know I can go to hospital and be looked after there if thats what needs to be done. Thats what I needed to hear. I might mention the psychotherapy next time. It has not been a problem for two years but these last few weeks have made me regress somewhat.
Thank you for your help.
