Hi there everyone. Last summer I got the Mirena fitted under anaesthetic. I am terrible at taking the pill, and was persuaded by what I was told would be 'minimal effects from the small amounts of hormones' in the Mirena.

The contraceptive side of the Mirena has obviously been very good. I've also had very little in the way of periods, a very light bleed at random times. A panty liner for one day is sufficient. At first I got a little acne around my chin, which i expected as even though there is little in the way of hormones in the mirena, it still is a change to the body. This seems to have calmed down a bit (fingers crossed, although you never know with hormonal acne...it is a bugger).

I have put on a little weight, and my boobs have shrunk a little, I also think my hair is getting thinner, my mum has thin hair - but has had lots of problems with her hormones too in the past.

The worst thing is that my sex drive has completely vanished. like, there is nothing there at all. the thought of sex makes me actually cringe, I don't get it. nothing turns me on, not any person or situation. I never had a very large sex drive, but I knew what to do and when to feel sexy...and I'd deffinately feel random pangs of horniness, which i don't anymore.

My long term boyfriend is very understanding bless him, but I feel bad.

So, considering any sort of hormonal contraception has always had negative side effects for me (sometimes verging on the out of control)...clubbed with the fact that, without them, my natural state is very good (light and very regular periods, good skin, less water retention, no pmt anymore, my body feels light and energetic and somehow 'better' in a way I can't explain) I have considered going to the copper coil.

My natural periods are not heavy at all, and I think i could handle having them heavier. I just really like the idea of having no more hormones in my body. Condoms and things are just not practical to a scatter brain such as myself, plus I got caught pregnant using a condom once (I miscarried).

Does anyone who has been in a similar situation have any advice? (I know about alot of negative things that have happened to peeps) I just think my natural state is where I'd like to be, without risking pregnancy. I also think it might suit the copper coil based on my light periods.

I've been reading about the Gynefix copper coil, which I was never offered, but it sounds quite good so far

ps - when does male contraception come in - Im sick of having to be the one who has to deal with this mucking about with my body!
