Hi

have just been told during routine smear that I have prolapse and have been referred to gynae.

Been doing some research and apparently over half of women who have had children have this in one form or other. There are a few different types and you can have more than one type at a time.

I fit all the categories. Two difficult births, a number of miscarriages which needed d+c. Was a nurse for 20 years which involved (back then) a lot of heavy lifting and do very deep massage which takes its toll no matter how careful you are (no wrist, thumb or shoulder problems but obviously any strain I have done is internal).:(

Does anyone have any knowledge regarding treatments. I have a friend who is a doc she said don't bother with ring pressaries and advised mesh repair.

I don't mind if anyone wants to pm me with answers.

Thanks

Patchouli

Hi Patchouli

In Nov 2006 I was diagnosed with a bladder and womb prolapse. I was advised to have a repair on both, although was told it wasn't urgent. Prior to surgery though I questioned my consultant with regards to having a hysterectomy instead of a womb repair, I didn't fancy having major surgery (which both repairs are) and then having to have a hysterectomy at a later date. I was told that until I was on the operating table he couldn't be sure how bad the womb prolapse was and asked if I was willing for him to make a decision during surgery. I was quite happy with this, but to be honest I had been sterlised years previously and no way did I want anymore kids and was hoping that he would go for the hysterectomy. In Feb 2007 I had a bladder repair and a hysterectomy. The bladder repair was carried out by cutting through the vaginal wall and stiching it back into place. As far as I am aware he didnt use a sling or mesh, just stitches. Although following the operation I followed all guidelines (ie no lifting, sports etc ) , I have recently noticed that the bladder has started to prolapse again, but am hoping that it doesnt progess or its back to see the gynae.

If you can google for 'the hysterectomy assocociation' ( I think thats what its called), on their site there its lots of information regarding prolapse and treatments, not just hysterectomy. There is a UK association and a US one but cant remember which one had the explainations of all the treatments, but might be worth a look at both.

Regarding a 'ring' a friend of mine had one fitted after the birth of her 2nd child, and has had not problems since at all, and hes 8 now. I think the treatment varies depending on how severe the prolapse is and is a very personal decision between yourself and the consultant, I know I havnt looked back since having my hysterectomy but I know that for some people this wouldn't even be an option.

Good luck with everything and let us know how you get on xxx

In love and light
Bluebelle xxx

Hiya

Are you willing to try exercise before you go for an operation?

Wow Thanks Bluebelle and chris for getting back to me so quick.

The power that is HP and its forumers.:D

Thanks for your info Bluebelle I will keep that in mind and the link.

Chris, I am trying to do the Kegel exercises whenever I remember but I am only remembering when my back is sore, so might have to adopt a routine e.g before meals, when I get up, go to bed or something.

The only thing that has been bothering me is a aching lumbar area for about three months now which I put down to work, nothing else.:o

It appears to be extremely common so would say for anyone with unexplained back pain to ask to be checked for prolapses the next time they get a smear.

The joys of getting old.;)

Hi Patchouli

I'm not just thinking of pelvic floor exercises - I wonder if Pilates would help? I'm not a Pilates therapist, I've just been recommended that system by my physiotherapist.

Good idea Chris.

Believe it or not we actually have a yoga class on a Monday night at the centre. So should probably think about attending!!!! Thing is a few of my clients go too, but have to remember that this is MY time.

There is also a Pilates class in the church hall just along the road from us but not sure when it is on. I know the girl who take it as she used our place but eventually needed more space but she left on good terms so not a problem to attend.

I used to look at my mum in her late 40's (when I was 20 something, skinny and fit) and think I would never get as unfit as she was but now look at myself and I am just like her all over again. She had a full hysterectomy at my age. Oh the arrogance of youth.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate this.

Hi Patchouli,

I'm a GP referral personal trainer and I suggest that you do exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles before you have any intervention done. In most cases this is enough and I have very good results with clients doing thoses exercises
Please send me a PM if you want to discuss what exercises you need to do.

Dani 🙂
