anybody use this? what do you think?
i ma considering using it but worry that for the 12wks it lasts i could turn into some hormonally crazed woman!!
RE: contraceptive injection???
I had it and it worked a treat, I did however put weight on. I've got polycystic ovaries and the infection prevented me from having any of the pain I had had previously going cold turkey / on the pill. It stings a bit when it's first done but it doesn't turn you into a wild hormone beast. It doesn't suit everyone and I was warned if it didn't suit I'd just have to suffer for a few weeks whilst it went out of my system, that was the only thing holding me back.
Some doctors will wait the full 12 weeks and others will wait 10. I was told 11 weeks was best cause it reduces the chance of little mishaps. 😉 Not sure what the long term effects of no menstruation are (apart from the lack of inconvenience), I'm not on it now, but I wouldn't have a problem going back on it.
RE: contraceptive injection???
Hi
I am on it at present, and feel i should warn you.
When i was given it first i was told there were little or no side effects, since then i have had:
severe spots (though not acne)
greasy hair
very bad back ache
aching legs
weight gain
hot flushes
All of these the doctor said is probably from the injection.
Why am i still on it?
Well the fact is i am 150% sure i don't want any more children, and am waiting to be sterilised, and because i am on thw waiting list the doctor wont let me have anything else except the pill.
I really don't want to frighten you but i thought you should know as i was not told any of this before i had it and wonder weather i would have bothered if i had been. But then again it affects different people in different ways, so maybe you won't get ant of this.
It's up to you but like you say, once you have had it, it's there for at laest 12 weeks and there isn't anything you can do about any side effects you might get.
Lisa
RE: contraceptive injection???
Oh and i was also told by someone on here i think that it enduces i kind of mini menopause--- the hot fluses.
RE: contraceptive injection???
From my own personal experience, taking the injection was a BIG mistake.
At the time of taking it I was a vegan. This meant that my complete food intake consisted of fruit, veg, wholegrains, pulses, pastas and rices. Occasionally I would have a bag of crisps (had to be plain!) or chips.
However when I had the injection I cut crisp and chips out of my diet COMPLETELY.
I was also doing 45 minutes of cardiovascular exercise EVERYDAY.
Despite this I was gaining approximately 2lb per week. I felt completely helpless. The weight continued for up to a month of me coming off it and then I still couldnt shift the weight. I was VERY depressed.
I went from approx 8st 6lbs to just under 10 stone. None of my clothes fitted me and I felt terrible.
After all of this I went on a DP site on the internet. NOTE-This site was like a forum with peoples real experiences on it. It had GOOD and BAD posts. Some of the stories that people were sharing were awful. Lots of people experienced multiple miscarriages when the came off the injections and decided to start a family. Some had exteme weight gain.
They also said (this is the site-NOT my research) that in the US they use the DP injection to reduce the libido of male sex offenders. (This is one of its side effects[sm=cry.gif] )
I dont want to scare you or put you off but this is just my experience of it. At least with the pill, if it doesnt suit you you can stop taking it. With the injection, the effects are there to stay once they are in the body (and after you have stopped taking it in some cases).
Saying all of this though, my sister-in-law is on it and has had no problems!![sm=jump1.gif]
I have just condradicted myself! Bugger!!!!

RE: contraceptive injection???
BTW, you need to change your profile-it is saying that you are male??!!!!

RE: contraceptive injection???
I had totally forgotten about that, I think they may have said to me that I should wait two years before trying for a family after being on depo..
And thanks for letting me know Trinityx - sex change now complete. And painless too!
RE: contraceptive injection???
Just one more scary bit. I had it for the first time in march and apart from a day here and there(probably about two weeks in total) i have been bleeding non stop
RE: contraceptive injection???
Oh that's not good, have you come off it again? It can be normal to have breakthrough bleeding for the first cycle but it often stops quite quickly.
RE: contraceptive injection???
[:'(]
well well i think i'll stay clear of the jab then!!
lol thanks for all your replies.
its the 12wks that are putting me off-like i said i could turn into a nutcase for 12wks, or bleed for weeks!
i am also scared of the side effects- i've been on the pill for about 8 yrs now-idont think thats good for my body and having the injection will mean stopping periods which isn't natural.
thing is though, similat to trinity- ihave two friends who have the injection and love it-they seem impressed.
will ponder a while longer......
peace and love

RE: contraceptive injection???
Just a thought.
Have you considered the coil?
It is pretty safe, has VERY few side effects, and after a little initial discomfort you are safe for 5 years.
This is the option i wanted but was refused because i am waiting for sterilisation.
Lisa
RE: contraceptive injection???
I know all methods of contraception are not 100 per cent, but some years ago, I fell pregnant with the coil fitted. I was on medication at the time and no one could tell me that this wouldn't affect the baby or that the baby would be unaffected developing with a coil still in the womb, so I had to have the pregnancy terminated.
I'm sure this is very rare, but just wanted to point out that nothing is totally safe.

RE: contraceptive injection???
Think they are all trial and error, I know people with kids who have had the pill, condoms, coil, depo, norplant (is that the right word? The one in the arm) one of the girls has three pill babies.. must be a certain type of person who is more susceptible.. or more likely for their contraception o fail.
RE: contraceptive injection???
It's actually quite weird, because it took me two years to conceive my first child and that was assisted and then I find myself falling pregnant with the coil fitted, although I had been using this method for about seven years with no problems. C'est la vie!
