can anyone tell me what causes whiteheads. I have developed them on my face,how on earth will I get rid of them

Lots of reasons, age, puberty etc. It's sebum which is trapped. They can become very painful, do not be tempted to squeeze them otherwise you will geta scar.
Don't be tempted to think you need to strip your skin of oil to deal with it either.
You could find yourself a good beauty therapist experienced in facials, or you could even go to your local college and receive a treatment there under the experienced eye of the tutor, be cheaper. Both these options would be good, you need advice on skin care routine and product use.
