I'm hoping someone can help with this. I can't get in to see my doctor as this is not an emergency and they will only take emergency patients.

I had a stye on my right eye, and it's spread and now I have spots all over my eyelid. It's even spread to my left eye. I've used hot poultices which seem to help: also aloe vera moisturiser, Avene eye balm which has helped, and an Eve Taylor eye gel.

I went to a pharmacist because I couldn't get into the doc's, and he said all I can do is wait until it blows itself out, and keep on with the moisturiser. I'm fed up with it, I'm getting through enough concealer to plaster a wall!

Any ideas?

The only thing that comes to mind, Chris, is that maybe you're using too much stuff? Sure, it may all be good, organic etc but my way of dealing with styes is just to let them be, apart from the judicious application of a flannel wrung out in very hot boiled water (cooled down to bearable temperature of course!) The concealer seems like a bad idea - healing should take precedence over vanity! 🙂

I'm rather inclined to agree with sunanda here, especially so far as the concealer goes.

A suggestion would be, while you're boiling the kettle, to also drink some of the hot water to help flush out your system.

Well I only use make-up two days a week at the moment so I think the system can cope! Besides which, which client wants to see a therapist whose eyes are covered in spots?

As I say, I've been using the hot poultices now and things seem to have spread rather than got better. What are the alternatives?

Hi Chris,

Sorry to hear that you have such a nasty outbreak.

It might be worth going to see the optician as your GP is busy in case you need an antibiotic ointment to reduce the contamination.

That's a good idea! Specially as my optician is a walk-in type! Why didn't I think of that! Thank you!

An update for y'all:

I actually managed to get in to see a doctor!

She prescribed Metrogel (Flagyl to give it its old name) to rub on the skin daily, and go back to her in a few weeks.

When I got it home and read the leaflet, it said "Avoid eye area as it might cause stinging"... (sigh)

Well it doesn't sting so I'm applying a tiny amount to the affected areas, and more to the facial skin around the eyes.

Ho hum, as they say.

I'm having a flashback! A few years ago I went to my doctor about styes that kept appearing at the base of my eyelashes and he gave me a prescription for some steroid cream. When I read the leaflet, I discovered that it said 'not to be used anywhere near the eyes' so I went back to the doctor to complain and he said I should use it on the lower eyelid without getting it in my eyes. (Easy!) Anyway I chucked it in the bin rather than risk it. And yes, I still get styes from time to time.
Hope yours are clearing up now, Chris. (It wasn't Metrogel that I was prescribed but something like hydrocortisone by another name.)
