Hi, I was wondering if you knowledgable lot can help me? I am struggling at the moment with loads of spots. I have very sensitive skin, and have to be really careful what I use, I have always had the odd spot, but just recently I keep getting these huge painful ones, just as I seem to get rid of one another erupts, I feel like putting a bag over my head!! I am using an over the counter spot cream, but it is making my skin flaky. Also I have had 4 large spots on my chin, and although they are no longer painful, the blemishes just won't go, they have been there for about a month now!

I know there must be something I can do, but don't know what!!

I hope someone can help, thanks

RE: spots and blemishes

Hello Zena, poor you. Perhaps we need a little more info. Are you a teenager for instance? (hormones are a big culprit, but at least that's usually a temporary thing.) What's your diet like?(sugar and chocolate are big culprits. Also spicy foods and oily foods. )
I've got good skin, and here's what I do (and I went through the teenage spot thing). Cleanse morning and night with oil of olay cleanser and cotton wool. Moisturise (the best I can afford). Drink plenty of water. I don't eat junk. I don't smoke. If I do get a spot I leave it alone.

When I was a spotty teen I remember using witch hazel to dry it up and then rose water to moisturise.
Good luck, I'm sure you'll get some help from some beauty experts.
Sharon

RE: spots and blemishes

Hi, Thanks for the reply!

I'm not a teenager, as a teenager I had no spots!! I'm in my 30's. I don't suppose I have the healthiest of diets, but I don't eat much chocolate, oily or spicy foods. I am a vegetarian, and don't like meat-substututes, so could be lacking in that area. My skin is really sensitive, I have tried loads of cleansers and moisturisers and most of them irritate my skin, the only thing I have found I can use is 'simple' soap and moisturiser which I use twice a day. Oh and I don't smoke. I wear make-up more now than I used to, so maybe that isn't helping, but not wearing foundation as a cover-up is not an option!! (is there any brands better for your skin?)

I hope this info helps!!

RE: spots and blemishes

Hi - good skin comes from the inside - out!! There are dozens of vitamins and minerals needed for good skin but the most important ones are vitamins A and C and the mineral zinc. are you getting enough of all these nutrients?? You can get a decent amount of vitamin A from one portion of liver, decent amounts of vitamin C from lots of fruit and vegetables and the best source of zinc is oysters. Maybe you can take a supplement for the zinc. Lambers do a good liquid one. Cleansing, toning and moisturising also of utmost importance too of course. Hope this helps.

Hi Zena. I remember knowing someone once who was veggie and she had spots - she gave up onions and peppers, and that helped. Can't think of anything else at the moment. Sharon

RE: spots and blemishes

Hi Zena

I dont know if this will help but I have read your condition and I might be wrong here but have you got Acne Rosacea - even a mild case of it?

Acne Rosacea must not be confused with Acne vulgaris. I am doing a beauty course and a few weeks ago we touched on this subject. I might be wrong but this is what I was told:

Acne rosacea can be long standing and can be disfiguring as the skin becomes lumpy and thickened with papules (spots without a "head" and pustules (spots without a "head" ie pus). Acne rosacea appears in your 30's and seldom appears before the age of 30 while acne vulgaris has usually regressed by this age.

A change in temp i.e. going from hot to very cold and visa a versa can cause a reaction so can drinking alchol, and eating spicy foods (which you say you do not eat)

Acne rosacea makes your skin go quite red and the spots can be very painful and last a long time. It is also associated with seborrhoea (excessive oiliness).

I am not sure if you have this - you could go to your doctor or a therapist and get it checked out. One thing I was told was that you dont have to have acne vulgaris as a teenage to get acne rosacea! Anyone can get it.

I am also a strict veggie and I dont get any spots but I have noticed over the last two months that when I am on my monthlys I get one painful one that 'marks' my skin and leaves a scar and does not go for ages.

What you can do is make sure that you use the best skin care you can afford (veggie ones are liz earle, meadowsweet (very cheap), elemis, welda, jason, Tissarand) - all of these areq uite reasonable excep for liz earle and elemis they are quite expensive most of these products esp meadowsweet do a fragrance free natural range and a 'baby' range which is good for sensitive skin. Also they are all organic and use natural prodcuts as they are all veggie (meadowseet is vegan - I use this range and swear by it!)

Also dont ever pick your skin or use products that are too harsh or else you end up going around in a circle. I agree with the other comments that you also need to look at your diet and make sure its as healthy as poss and you drink lots of water. Treat your skin with care.

At the end of the day dont feel ashamed - we all get spots and blemishes - everyone does so dont feel embarressed

Good luck!

Hope you dont think I am preaching!
