I've been washing my hands as much as possible recently.

And now the skin between my fingers is dry and red and a bit flaky and sore. My middle finger joints are sore and rough too.

What cream would you recommend?
I have Vaseline, Savlon, Calendula, Arnica, Palmer's Cocoa Butter.

If I need to get anything else, it needs to be relatively inexpensive.

I'm also in homeopathic treatment, so need to be careful with what I use.

why are you washing your hands as often as possible? can you wear gloves if your hands keep on getting dirty?
I would recommend changing what you wash your hands with...use a more gently soap/gel and use tepid water - not very hot or cold water...as for the hand cream after - it really depends what you are doing after washing...some are more greasy than others so things may slip our of your hands....i find E45 to be good for dry chapped skin...or open a capsule of vitamin e.
make sure you were rubber gloves when washing dishes, cleaning etc so the problem doesn't get any worse....hope it clears up soon x

hi

i tend to get very dry sore hands, particularly in the winter. I have tried most hand creams but the only one i have found to be effective is from the body shop i think it is called hemp, it doesnt smell the greatest but it definately works.

Hi

I have extremely dry, sore hands all year through. I am always washing my hands and I wash even more now that I have a 16 month old. I agree with the others - you need to switch to a more moisturising soap or even better a hand wash as this would be less drying.

I also use a hand scrub to get rid of the dry skin so my hand cream can moisturise deeper. The products I use are as follows:

 • Morrisons extra moisturising antibacterial hand wash (its so cheap like 60p!)
 • No7 hand scrub £10.50 its expensive but it has oils that go into the skin - its brilliant. The body shop do one for £7.00 but I find half way through the product it dries out so I cant seem to squeeze the product out of the tube,
 • Body Shop Hemp hand cream tube (its about £7.00 I think)

Hope that helps

Hi Eleison

I'm concerned that you say your hands are dry from overwashing. Do you know why you are washing them excessively? I ask because obsessive hand-washing can be a symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). If that's the case it's generally quite easy to treat yourself by CBT (see books), without going anywhere near a GP and their SSRIs antidepressants.

Anyway, you may well be washing your hands a lot because you've got a new job in a fishmongers! So, back to your question. I too have very dry hands (unfortunately I inherited it from my father) and have found the best hand cream is Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector. It's expensive, but they often have promotions when it is offered at half price. I stock up then. Also good is [DLMURL="http://www.boots.com/en/Palmer-s-Cocoa-Butter-Formula-Therapeutic-Hand-Cream-60g_1002845/"]Palmers Cocoa Butter Hand Cream[/DLMURL]. It's a lot cheaper, and I use it during the day, whereas I use the Body Shop one last thing at night and first thing in the morning.

[Woops... edit... just noticed you are already using Palmers.]

Yep would agree with that Body Shop Hemp Hand protector is the only one which really works for me. Worth every penny. I also have excessively dry hands - no idea why. The rest of me is fine!

Try slapping some on last thing at night and then wearing cotton gloves whilst you sleep. It is like a intenstive moisturising treatment. You'll notice the difference next day. You can get cotton gloves especially for this purpose from Boots or Tescos. I think Avon do them too. Try it with socks for your feet too!

Hi Eleison
excellent tips in this thread. What you can also try is organic apple cidar vinegar. Apply it neat. leave for 15-20 minutes rinse with warm water and apply moisturiser. It should treat it well
best of luck

jnani - That's an interesting suggestion. Do you know by what mechanism that might work?

Hi Ava I used to know it once upon a time! had a little book about it, misplaced it, if it does turn up, I shall tell you. Was called 'Wisdom of Mount Vermont' or somethong like that but now all I know is that ACV is the only 'medicine' I have used for years. It works like magic on skin and stomach and a host of other troubles.

I use ACV too - when my hands get dry (usually November) I put ACV on cotton wool and apply that to my knuckles, then put a panty liner on top and then cotton gloves. Doesn't look very glamorous but it works. Leave it to soak for 20+ minutes then rinse with tepid water, apply vaseline and then more gloves and go to bed.

I also do a salt/olive oil scrub once or twice a week, then apply cream and wear gloves over night.

I have a tube of hemp cream in my handbag - it lasts for ages and is excellent.

A panty liner? This is getting stranger and stranger! I have no doubt that this works for you, but how on Earth did you work out that putting a panty liner on top of ACV would cure dry skin??

It reminds me of when I first heard that wine is strained through isinglass- which is made from fish bladders. Now, how... who... what... made someone think 'ooh, I'll use this fish bladder, and dry it, and extract this substance... and strain wine through it'!

I never said it 'cures' my problem. It stops the ACV leaking out if I've been overgenerous applying it to the cotton wool. There is a leakproof membrane. Why not use it?

No idea about the isinglass as I don't drink - but one of the bright sparks who frequent this forum is bound to know the origins.
