any ideas on how a very skinny 19 year old can avoid stretch marks during her pregnancy?
(I would prefer to hear about things you used /your friends used, rather than theoretical suggestions though)
thanks 🙂

RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
I seem to have avoided them this time around by exfoliating - I used coconut body scrub from The Body Shop.
RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
keep the skin exfoliated well with a good scrub and apply a heavy moisturizer regularly... like shea or cocoa butter....
ps. if your mom has stretch marks, it's a good chance you'll get them too.. but by keeping the skin very moisturized you'll keep them from getting too bad.
RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
I used jojoba oil with a drop of neroli in it. And rosehip oil after the birth.
Dh claims not to see any sign of stretch marks (but then, he has a vested interest in keeping me sweet I guess :D)
I was skinny 29 year old at the time and had a 9 1/2lb baby; I thought my skin was going to pop right open during the last month LOL!

RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
I tried everything and was a slim 17year old when I was pregnant ~ my stomach now looks like a map of the british isles and I hate it.
RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
shea butter does really great - my girlfriend used this when she was preggers and didnt have any marks afterwards...

RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
But I had three kids, and used nothing, and have no stretch marks.
Maybe you either get them or you don't.

RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
I'm the same as sharon, I've had three kids & didn't get stretch marks, I supose it comes down to skin type & luck.

RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
I was a size 8 at the start of my pregnancy - didn't use anything and didn't get any stretch marks.
Actually, i studied dermatology years ago and the findings are that (as previously mentioned) you either get them or you don't, depends on your skin elasticity, my mom doesn't have any either.....sorry, you didn't want theory!
....i'm sure cream must help a little 😉
RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
Hi, I think it is a case of some people get more than others. one friend used avacado oil with a bit of grapeseed and a couple of drops of orange oil about every other day for the last three months. worked for her. i have stretch marks just from weight gain and scarsand i have found that bio-oil has started helping. you can get it at chemist or superdrug or supermarkets (its on offer at superdrug at the moment!!!!) good luck 😀
RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
It is genetic, so if your mum had it your will probably too. Using creams, even the most expensive once will not help, however might be relaxing moment for your husband/partner to rub it in your belly 🙂
I do not have the stretch marks, and I hope you will not, but I am sure this is not the end of the world if I would have...:D
Good luck

RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
My friend suggested almond oil!
RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
My mum didn't get them and neither did I. I ballooned when preggers - was a size 6 and 7st (I am small in general!) before baby and went up to 10.7st!! My sis however, a bigger build than me, did not put on the same amount of weight, did get them... everywhere. I didn't use any creams, my sis bought everything on the market. Its just down to genes (she obviously didn't have my mum's) and luck.
RE: how to avoid stretch marks?
hiya iw ould recommend a product called bio oil applied to the somach area all through and after the birth, its available from holland and barretts it contains vit e for skin healing wounds scars and stretch marks and really does work i work there and have seen the results on my cutomers,we sell lots of it its our main stretch mark product also contains lots of other healing and soothing ingredients, wish you all the best for the remainder of your pregnancy and wish u the best for a safe delivery of oyur son/daughter if can be of any futher advice im here for u xxtake care
I know this is months later now, but it may be of use to someone!!
My mum got stretch marks, but I didn't, and I truly believe it was down to me using Neil's Yard Remedies Mother's Massage Oil every few days from the start of me getting a bump (which wasn't until about 15 weeks!!) until just before my daughter was born. I put on quite a lot of weight towards the end of the pregnancy (well, actually, by the end I think I looked like a beached whale!!), but didn't get any stretch marks on my tummy at all. However, i DID get them on the tops of my thighs, where I didn't think of using any oil. doh! :p
I had 4 children, biggest nearly 9 lbs.....I used baby oil.........no stretch marks at all. My sister has stretch marks everywhere really bad.
I also think its your genes, i don't think its what you use, maybe it helps.
Hiah,
Was v.skinny too
Hi there!
Zinc deficiency can also predispose you to stretch marks as well as milk flow when breast-feeding. Hair mineral analysis can help in determining your zinc level.

So with something like Bio Oil, do you think it's simply the Vitamin E content that is the real contender is stretch mark 'prevention'? I've invested in some some Vit E capsules to snip open and rub the oil directly onto the skin.
Anyone else tried this?
Hi there lisamj,
I think vitamin 'E' capsules rubbed into the skin has been a long-standing 'preventive' measure for stretch marks.
Debsy probably knows the exact ingredients of Bio Oil, but I would think that the vitamin 'E' is most significant.

My sister was 18 when she had her first and her stomach is like crepe paper. She hates it. I had my first last October at 35 and I haven't got a one and I was huge - no kidding.
My midwife said that the young mums tended to get the stretch marks whereas the older ones didn't. I suppose the young ones are still growing and their hormones which are still settling down at this age, must play a big part.
I was absolutely positive they'd come right up to having her, but they didn't.
I used pure aloe vera on mine, but I can't really say if it worked.
