Can anyone tell me what foods an adult who has jaundice should and should not eat. They are at the moment only having sugar cane and chickpeas (indian mentality - thats whay they should eat!!!) Of course this means they are not getting the right nutrients they need.

All help appreciated

RE: Jaundice

For all forms of jaundice it is best to avoid spicy food, alcohol and foods high in fat (really fat intake needs to be as low as possible). A bland diet high in carbs is recommended.

It is best to check with the GP though, as there are many reasons why adults get jaundice and they should recommend the correct diet as some forms require higher levels of protein.

I had Jaundice when I was 16. I just cut out dairy produce. I was having breakfast cerial with tinned fruit. Toast with just jam...etc. As angelfish says, best kept bland, I suppose. Jaundice can leave the liver scarred, which in my case has lead to my condition NASH.

You may find this link useful

I jsut did a google search on jaundice and diet. There were quite a few links. As with all things advice on the web needs to be weighed. If you have concerns it is probably worth having a chat with your GP or finding a nutritional therapist.

Hi there

I had jaundice this time last year, i caught hepatitis A from contaminated water. Its a terrible thing to get. You must avoid alcohol, this is an absolute no no as is all fatty food and too much sugar, if you can avoid sugar all together that's great but of course not always so easy but definitely try in the early days. A diet rich in unrefined carbs i.e. brown rice not white, health breads and of course plenty of vegetables. Fruit is also good but i would advise it in moderation and maybe citrus could aggravate it if too much consumed. Dairy is also best avoided. I stuck to chicken breasts (skinless), fish and no rich food with creamy sauces. Its a long process for the liver to recover so its best to keep up this healthy diet for many months. Eventually you can reintroduce things a few months down the line but take it one step at a time and be patient.

The liver is an amazing organ which can regenerate itself if looked after and the damage is not severe. I would also suggest to take a milk thistle supplement and dandelion tea is also beneficial. Please always remember to drink plenty of water. Be kind to your liver and all will be better 😮

Not really diet related but dandelion tincture and Milk thistle tincture are both useful for jaundice. This link might be useful Naturopathic Health

I have a malfunctioning liver and to be able to function I have to avoid the following: preservatives, white potato, white rice, sugar, alcohol, wheat, and dairy. If I don't I can become fuzzy, sleepy, jaundice, clumsy, forgetful and lose weight. It is not good. I particularly find leaving sugar alone the worst. They say milk thistle is very good for the liver, but not particularly successful for my condition!

Good luck, I hope it's nothing too serious. And hope it leaves you soon.
