Hi there,

I just results for my thyroid which apparently are 'normal' what ever that may be!! hehe!

But on looking I have discovered that what mine are is classed as outwith the 'normal' range. SO now I'm confused!

Does anyone know what numbers the normal range runs between?

I intend discussing it with my doctor further as if this is normal then I don't want to be normal! I feel rubbish! But I also know there must be nothing worse for them than having people constantly saying 'well I found on the internet..' so I would like to get as much info as possible.

My results came back as 2.91 if that means anything to anyone?

Thanks xxx

Hello Flowingflower

I'm not sure what has been measured, but assume it is TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) which is excreted by the pituitary gland. 'Normal' levels are quoted at between 0.15 and 3.5 mil-units per litre (mU/l) but according to Dr Barry Durrant-Peatfield anything over 2.0 should be considered to indicate a failing thyroid function. I seriously suggest you find out as much as you can about it and an excellent source of this information in a relatively understandable form is his book The Great Thyroid Scandal and How to Survive it, published by Barons Down, ISBN 0-9544203-0-6. I read it through several times to make sure that I could discuss things with a certain amount of knowledge with the doctor. The thyroid is a vital gland in our bodies and if it does not work properly then nothing does.

I have gone on to study it in some detail because it became obvious that how I was being treated was not working and probably not doing so for very many years. Please make sure you get it sorted and don't get fobbed off as I was. Demand a second or third opinion if necessary, or even go private as I had to. There are Durrant-Peatfield clinics nationwide, or if you google thyroid help or similar then lots of links come up and various helpful doctors are referred to.

I obviously can't go into details, but there are many possible causes and variations of malfunction and it may take some digging to find out what's going on. Put simply, Levothyroxine, artificial thyroxine (T4) is what is normally given if 'low thyroid' is thought to be the problem. The T4 is the inactive form which the body then has to convert to T3 the active form and there are various mechanisms and deficiencies that can cause this to fail. Some people have no problems with converting, but not all. A nutritional therapist should also be able to help you to get through the maze.

I wish you every success and fast health recovery

Caroline

Has Dr Durrant-Peatfield be reinstated after his suspension by the GMC, the BBC report said he took early retirement?

Hi Myarka

I believe he has retired but apparently has a number of doctors working for him now see this link. The suspension problem was because he dared to treat people with thyroid problems differently by using natural thyroid extract (which includes T1, T2, T3 and T4) instead of artificial T4. In fact the GMC had to back down as he proved his case beyond reasonable doubt. He decided to leave the GMC anyway.

There are very many people who are being short-changed by their poor thyroid care in this country - see this link - it is a problem because of Big Pharma's stranglehold on the NHS - natural thyroid is not patentable.

Best wishes, Love and Light

Caroline

Thanks Caroline for the information...

I just really wanted to know for speaking to my doctor on Tues. My sister has also got thyroid problems and I don't really want to have to wait until things are really bad before I can do something about it.

I have been looking for a herbalist locally to try to deal with it but the nearest I can find is an hour and a half away! Bother...
