Hey there everyone. 🙂
Well, ....it's almost like I have fixed every other thing with my body (.....back is great now, achilles is fine, etc.). The one long long term niggling thing is the knee.
More immediate problem is a very recent one. When I stand up from a crouching/sitting position, I hear a bit of a crunching sound. Sort of odd. It's so definitely from the knees.
Anyone know what that is all about!? Thank you!
RE: Knees make a bit of a crunching sound when I stand up.
Hi Fox,
Does it cause you any pain when this happens?
I have had the same issue for about 7 years (i'm only 26!) and I was told by my gp that it was the cartilage in my knee rubbing against the bone, doesn't hurt me at all but sounds rather worrying, but he advised as long as it doesn't start to hurt it shouldn't cause a problem.
He put it down to the amount of sport i used to play, as used to play football 2-3 times a week, plus training sessions, playing rugby for school as well as having a kick-about with mates.
My dad also has it but his is much more of a crack (and my god is it loud!)
He always makes a noise as though it hurts him but I think he just likes to get attention as when he doesn't think anyone is about and it happens he doesn't make a sound!

Try typing Plica pain syndrome into your search engine, the info is quite useful.

RE: Knees make a bit of a crunching sound when I stand up.
I always seem to get a clicking sound when crouching down. But it's nothing to worry about unless it starts to hurt.

[:'(][>:][&o] well, ..........now, in the last week or so only, the knees have started to hurt! [&:]
grrrrrrrr!!
actually, I should say, it's not like they were 'brilliant' last week. For YEARS and years, my knees would hurt if I ran more than 50 metres or so. Jeez, that is a downer for me. I manage by simply not running, but , man, it does not please me!! (I want to be able to run!). In the last 5 years (I'm 29), I noticed that running starts to be painful on the old knees soon after starting off. I used to run quite a bit! If anyone has any ideas on what I could or should do, or also what I might HAVE done to 'em, greatly greatly appreciated!!

Hi Fox1
where abouts are you based, I could possibly recommend someone to see

RE: Knees make a bit of a crunching sound when I stand up.
Sounds like degeneration & inflammation in either the main cartilages of the knee joints or the joint between the patella and the knee joint.
Suggest seeing an osteopath to see if there is adverse tension on the knee cap and generally improve the function of the knee.
Things known to help with degeneration of cartilage include;
- Vitamin C (preferably with bioflavenoids)
- Copper - long story - posted elsewhere on HP
- Celedrin - the latest addition to the positve research on natural supplements.
- Glocosamine sulphate & hyrdochloride
- Chondroitin sulphate
- MSM
Reality is that these and other things may help your system compensate, but foryour age there seems to be excessive inflammation and degeneration going on and suggest that you look up your nearest NAET practioner to see if they can get to the bottom of it.
NAET practioner list here - [link= http://www.naeteurope.com/gb_default.asp ]http://www.naeteurope.com/gb_default.asp[/link]
My problems started with knee pain when I was 19 YOA - now 41 & knees are not a problem. I took all manner of supplements, exercises & treatment for the most part, even acquires a degree in osteopathy on my path to recovery, but NAET seems to have finally resolved the problem.

RE: Knees make a bit of a crunching sound when I stand up.
wow. thank you very much for all that info. appreciate it a lot!
I have about 5 seconds at the moment! But I'll definitely look into it all! 🙂
Today, my knees are kind of the worst they've been.
I can still walk and ride and so on, but it's not too much fun.
um, oh yeah, it's particularly the left knee for some reason.
I will check it out with a doc. osteopath. NAET... I'm in Asia, uhhhh, I'll look into it!! [8D]
The main thing on my mind is.. how did this happen? I didn't have any major injury. I am 29. um, I noticed it started all of 6 years ago, when I had a bit of trouble doing a bit of a marathon. I was like, damn, what was that?! Ever since, I haven't been able to run as easily as before.
Now, basically, I can't really run at all. That sux. I see old people do marathons and I want to be able to do that! 😀
I guess the main question really that I want to pose here, ..is are these various sorts of knee problems fixable at all? And , is it surgery that does the trick? or.. as you mention, a lot more things too
RE: Knees make a bit of a crunching sound when I stand up.
Hi Fox1,
dont despair, non surgical intervention can be very beneficial, I suggest a full check up with any competent muscular/skeletal therapist as ANAHATA recommends.
29 is very young to experience any degeneration, most likely from your running experience, gait, biomechanics all will contribute, postural imbalances cause problems. so seek expert help, then when recovered seek specialist training advice.
best regards

RE: Knees make a bit of a crunching sound when I stand up.
Hi Fox1,
Have a think aboiut what happens when you bend your knees. Do both knees align with your feet? Or do they drop in?
You'll need a mirror or a friend to give you feed-back.
Stand with your feet aligned with your hip -bones - the bony promontories on the front/side of your pelvis lining up with the toe next to the big -toe.
Your feet may point outwards - this is OK, but if there is a big turn-out that might be contributing to the problem.
Check where the centre of the knee-cap is in relation to the hip bone and that second toe. It should be in a plumb-line.
When you bend your knees, do they stay in alignment?
Do you achieve your squat without pelvic rotation?
If not this is something you can work on, to achieve a balance of muscle tone around the knee. Let me know and I'll give you the exercises if qppropriate.
Many people with knee injuries do not recruit glute max properly. What are your bum muscles like?
PS Big Gaz - this guy is in India - he doesn't have access to professional advice in the same way that you or I do.
