Hi,
I have a client that is having pains in his shoulder when he lifts his arm into a certain position, this has been happening for approx 3 weeks now. He says when he rotates his shoulder in a certain position it "clicks"
I am trying to decide which treatment would be best, i offer the following:
MLD
Aromatherapy
Reflexology
Swedish massage
Stress Massage
IHM
Any advice greatly appreciated!
RE: Advice - painful shoulder
Hi
Out of the ones you offer probably reflexology for me although it can take a couple of sessions before it starts to show improvement, if he want to work on the problem directly then some deeptissue or soft tissue release can be great for the rotator cuff but that would mean referring him on.......

RE: Advice - painful shoulder
There are lots of possibilities on that one, but the most common are:-
If it's a boney click, then the most likely source is the AC (acromio-clavicular) joint. You can test this by feeling over the joint as he performs the offending action. It may be hypermobile due to local physical trauma (a seat belt in an RTA is a popular cause). Other possibilities include - straining to compensate for a restriction in movement of other associated areas & joints, such as the SC at the other end of clavicle.
Soft tissue clicks include 'tendon snap' where a tendon slips over a boney prominence & fibrous muscle tissue between scapula & ribs.
Questions to ask -
Exactly where is pain being percieved? (NB Many shoulder complaints refer pain to the lateral deltoid area & it's insertion onto humerous)
Does the click exacerbate pain or coincidental?
Is there any associated neck pain & are there any neck movements that also aggravate?
Is there a constant background ache/pain - associated with inflammation? 🙁
The ones to watch out for, of course, viscerally referred pain patterns i.e.
Left shoulder - angina - typically worse on exertion.
Right shoulder - gall bladder - may worsen sometime after food.

RE: Advice - painful shoulder
Prehaps it would be a good idea if they went to a doctor first to actually find out what it is that is wrong with the shoulder.
It could be anything and i dont know, but imagine its safer to know what your treating/working on then just taking a guess incase you actually do any more harm?[&o]
I dont know, just an idea.:)

RE: Advice - painful shoulder
I have found that the doctors aren't necessarily the best at diagnosing skeletal & muscular problems, they generally don't have enough time to really investigate the problem, and assume it will get better on its own, while more damage is being done. If the pain is recurring, they may decide to send you for an x-ray, but this won't show up any soft tissue damage.
As Anahata says the first steps really are locating the perceived pain/source of pain & what action causes it. Has your client given you any clues? such as sporting activities, lifestyle issues, sleeping position, posture etc. The shoulder is the most freedom of movement than any other joint in the body, so not surprisingly it is sometimes difficult to locate the exact source of pain. I would personally look at the movement that creates the problem & start from there.
I don't really think that you need to refer them just yet, but would make sure I REALLY warm up the area before doing any deep work, sometimes that's all that is needed.
As a longterm sufferer of shoulder pain I wish you & your client the best of luck!
RE: Advice - painful shoulder
Hiya Angelfish is probably right 🙂
Just it was 4 months after my arthritis started before i saw a doctor, i had tried to ignore it and ''work on'' even tried accupunture and massage, later found out id caused 60% MORE damage to the joint and that i should really of seen a doc ASAP. Or seen a doc and been refered anyway...
Two years on i still get lectures from the rheumatologist about not going to get it seen to as soon as the pain started and trying too ''heal it myself'' which starts him off into a rant about how 40% of the population leave it to late etc etc 🙁
but at 16 years old i really didnt see any point or feel it was anything to worry about...how wrong was i LOL
Hope you find something to help the person anyway 🙂
Love Fiona
RE: Advice - painful shoulder
Hi again Fiona,
sorry to hear of your troubles with Rheumatism, at 16 I guess you probably thought the pain was just "a thing" and would pass. Not very nice at all.
From my personal experience I have only had muscular problems & my success with doctors is pretty poor.. although I do rush to the doctor hoping they might shed some light! [sm=idea.gif] To be totally honest, I have tried everything acupuncture, chiropractor, osteopath, kinesiologist, obviously massage etc everything seems to work a bit and then stops. 😉
RE: Advice - painful shoulder
Hiya Angel
yes i know what you mean about doctors!
I had pain in my wrist about the age of 13 and after it hadnt cleared for few months i went to a doc and was told it was just a pulled muscle and would be fine, after another 4 months when it was no better i went back and was told it was just strained but would be 'fine'.
The pain was there on and off until i got to about 17, this was when they finally realised this had been the very start of the arthritis!!!! [:@]
Luckily my own doc is really good but is very busy so you have wait wait about a month to see him...as for the rheumatologist......er lol [&o]
Well i have him on friday, and i know all he will say is he wants me to start taking steroids (which he knows i wont do) and suggest a few weeks in a rheumatology unit, its about 200 miles away and i did it early this year for 3 weeks....they were the mosy boring, pointless three weeks of my life lol - never again lol :D:D:D
Oh well, maybe he will come up with a miricle cure!! LOL [&o]
Fiona xx:):)
RE: Advice - painful shoulder
Hi Fiona,
maybe you should tell the story of your wrist to the rheumatologist next time blames you for not acting sooner. I would have a few choice words for him.
Also, saying by not acting earlier caused 60% more damage is a nonsense - that's something completly unknowable. In fact I would let go of the idea of 'damage', cos it sounds so permanent. [>:]
Life is a process - an ongoing fight against entropy.
Forgive me if I've already said some of this stuff. [&:]
Pharmaceutical non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAID's) actually cause more degeneration to joints over time, presumably because they block the inflammatory process that is an essential part of the healing process. 🙁
Although, of course, the inflammation gets out of hand in some cases, as is probably the case with your stuff. [:@]
Steroids on the other hand speed up the healing process resulting in weakened tissues. The very reason that many professional sports people fall in a heap & fall in a heap when they retire or are forced to retire early. [:'(]
The inflammatory process is closely tied into the immune system, which is why I feel the NAET system is a stroke of genius. I don't remember if I ever suggested seeing this guy - http://allergyfree.tripod.com/
Prior to having treatment myself I got most relief from:-
Strong antioxidant - Revenol from Neways.
Cats claw - excellent herbal anti-inflammatory, be aware, though that it does thin the blood a little, but that can be helpful for inflammation.
Others that may help, but may have tried.
Glucosamine Sulphate
MSM - another organic form of sulphur, that may help if glucosamine doesn't.
Copper - trace mineral - as a supplement or braclet
So some of these may help in meantime, but I would definately try & get to see Aaron (website above). 😉

Anahata
Hi there
I just wanted to thank you SO much for your post, lots of great information, thank you.

Thank you again for your info

RE: Advice - painful shoulder
Hi Fiona, Have you taken a look at Rheumatism having an emotional cause?
In the book "You can heal your life" by Louise Hay, she says about rheumatism:
"Feeling victimised. Lack of love. Chronic bitterness. Resentment
It is now more understood that arthiritis stems from criticism and resentment.
A great affirmation to say to yourself is:
"I create my own experiences. As I love and approve of myself and others, my experiences get better and better".
I cannot recommend this book enough. Whenever I experience any discomfort on my body, I will read up what is said about the condition, and I can always relate to it.
For example, whenever I get a cold sore, it will coincide with feelings of anger that are coming up for me to be dealt with.
In Louise's book she says about cold sores "Festering angry words and fear of expressing them". She's so spot on!
To anyone who is serious about understanding why we get sick, have aches and pains, please read the book.
I can understand why you don't wish to go on steroids. Did you know that the steroid continues to remain in your system, until some energy work is done, and the vibration is removed? A great crystal for removing the vibrational imprint of steroids is Obsidian.

Hiya Rosi
Sorry i took so long to reply, only just read the post, not bneen on the HP much this week as have been full of the cold.
No, ive never seen or heard of that book before, i wonder if they nave it on amazon. Im off to see the rheumatologist in an hour (see him every 3 months) Cant say im looking forward to it as i imagine he will be his usual rude sarcastic self lol [:'(]
I also didnt know that about the steroids, personally im not into tablets but after trying 3 months without any i know that i am going to have to take some form of anti-inflammatory again. Last time he said there were 2 other tablets i could try, but he woudl rather i would try steroids. I will tell him today i will try the other tablets as steroids are a big NO. Maybe they would help but long term i feel they would do a lot more damage.[:'(]
I will go and take a quick look for that book just now before i go.
Starting to get a little nervous now as hes always so mean LOL [:@]
Have a nice day
Love
Fiona 😀

RE: Advice - painful shoulder
Hi,
I have had problems with my shoulder which sounds similar to your clients.. the first time it was so painful I couldn't even lift my arm, my tutur did some kinesiology, and within 10 minutes it was completely cured...
Now, i've got general aches there, and I am seeing a Bowen Technique practitioner which is definetely helping..
Sorry its not on your list, but that's what worked for me..
Blessings
RE: Advice - painful shoulder
Hi Fiona, Sounds to me like your doctor isn't helping matters, especially if he's rude and sarcastic.
I know what I would do if I were you, change my doctor and find someone who understands.
Why put up with it? Any stress is only going to make you feel worse.
Love and light

RE: Advice - painful shoulder
Hiya Rosi
How are you today?
Sorry i dont think i explained well [&:]
My doctor is great, but this is the rheumatologist. Theres only a couple in scotland... And they all work '' under'' this one that i see (who is the head)
Today i saw the guy who works ''under'' him but as always the main one has to come in to do the assessment etc...Unless un taken off the list and go to england, i dont have much option.[&o][&o][&o]
As i thought it was useless so feeling a little down now. Steroids/hospital were the only real suggestions. I have said i will try another tablets but not steroids, i dont remember the name of the new tablet (hes writting to my own doc and sending me info on this tablet) cos he says i can cause liver probs and also blood problems (clotting and low cell count or something??[&:]) - Means i will have to see a doc every week to 2 weeks now to get my blood checked etc .....but u never know they might work. Maybe it will be a miricle cure 😮
I see my own doc in dec (16th) so i guess i will of got my new tablets before xmas 😮
I found that book on amazon today, i have actually just ordered on amazon last night [>:] typical lol - but i will see if i can find it localy but if not will order it up early next week 😀
Thanks again Rosi
