Hi, have just returned from a lovely holiday in Prague during which time I did a lot of walking about seeing the lovely sights. Idiot me forgot to take flat shoes so I bought some out there and broke them in (complete with blisters!) over the week. We flew back last night and I happily got back into comfy shoes today...and noticed that both my ankles were swollen, the right one very badly so. Bit of pain in the back of my legs but I figure thats more to do with the calf muscles screaming after I hauled myself up the many steps to Prague castle than anything else.
Things have got worse throughout the day and I am in real pain now with the right ankle. There's also a wee bit of a friction mark over the front of it from the shoe. Is this just the shoes or something else? My mum has a history of varicose veins but they've never affected me. Could anyone offer any ideas on how to reduce the swelling? I'm keeping my feet elevated but it hurts so much
Thanks

(who has post holiday blues and an annoying cough now so sorry for whiny post!!)
RE: Severly swollen ankles
Eli, I don't want to be alarmist- but have you eliminated DVT? I've just done a search and it can be caused just by being still for 5 hours - not necessarily in a plane. It's very serious. Please look into it.
Ice (a pack of frozen peas) is good for swelling, and keep the feet elevated and do some circling and point/flexing of the ankle joints, which will get your calf pumps working and get the fluid draining.
In the meantime am sending you Reiki.

RE: Severly swollen ankles
Hi Sharon
I'd kind of ruled out DVT because my flight was only 2 hours long - thought it wasn't long enough. Had to drive back from airport in early hours of this morning which was painful on the right foot especially but I though that was just aching feet after all that walking. It was a bit of a shock when I stood up this morning-feels really weird and painful. So the frozen peas are out and the feet are elevated. If it's not improved by Monday I'll pop to the doctors. Thanks ever so much for the reiki[sm=grouphug.gif]

Spinal music is correct. I had severe swollen ankle and leg after I had an operation. I would advise you to see the doctor immediately. In the meantime, have your leg higher than you hip joint and keep exercising your feet by flexing them. You can see more advice from the link below:

RE: Severly swollen ankles
Eli, how are you now?
RE: Severly swollen ankles
[sm=wave.gif] Hello, thanks for your replies and concern. I couldn't get an appointment at the doctors Monday or Tuesday. On Monday it remained v badly swollen and the lower part of my right leg started to swell. Now swelling has greatly lessened on both, it just feels a bit weird, like the skin is strteched if that makes any sense? I have taken train where possible for work as it hurts to put my foot on the accelorator. If there is no improvement tomorrow I'll try the docs again- am supposed to be driving to Manchester but can't see it happening.
Such an odd sensation.

Hi, Sorry I haven't been back on but I just wanted to write and thank you for the healing reiki and thoughts. My legs and ankles are now back to their normal size!

See a podiatrist or your doctor for a vascular assesment, It sounds like odema although without looking its impossible to say. If it was a DVT a bleed of an artery, it would most likly present with some pain due to the blockage, if it breaks away this is an embolism, this is the bit that travels around your body and can cause a MIA stroke, or lodge somewhere else, made worse if you have athrolsarosis causing narrowing of the arteries due to fat deposits.
Interesting post dude....discussion are always helpful in one way or the other. Thanks for giving out information. It’s really nice and mean full.
