Hi all, new here and desperate for some answers. Two weeks ago I woke up in the morning with palpitations. I've had these occasionally but in the past, after one or two 'funny' beats, it goes away. Not this time. I've had palps ALL the time for 14 days with only a break for one morning when they stopped and I thought 'yay' but then they came back at lunchtime. I'm having about 8 or 9 a minute which is about 12,000 a day!!

Last saturday, a week after they began, I ended up in A&E (ER) and had loads of tests - chest xray, ecg and bloods. All normal except white cell count a little bit low but not drastic, blood sugar high but has not been since and potassium and sodium very slightly raised but hardly at all. ECG showed palps and tachycardia but nothing else. No heart attack in bloods. Temperature rose a little while in hosp (admitted for the day) and BP was 164/86 (high for me) but has since stabilised. Temperature has been raised for a week now - 37.7 ish and after being discharged on saturday I've now had symptoms of flu-like feelings, tingling and numbness, exhaustion, light-headedness and dizzy, diarroehea (spelling!!) and stomach pains. Generally feeling very weird and unwell. No energy.

Saw GP this monday and he said it was a virus. I have recently had a bite (3 weeks ago) and it could have been a tick so I'm on doxycycline as a prophylactic for that. If it wasn't for CONSTANT and terrifying palps, I'd say yes, I have a virus. Have 24 hour heart monitor due on 9th August.

My question is, can a general virus cause you to just wake one morning with severe palps and then takea full 7 daysbefore any other symptoms occur - ie flu-like and temp? I'm baffled. Thanks SO much if anyone can help. BTW, I'm female, 39 generally healthy with dairy allergy.

Sam xx

RE: Palpitations 24/7

Hi Sam!
Can't help on the Virus side... let's see how the Doc handles that...
But I have had experience of patients with palpitations... If we eliminate the medical problems...you often find that there is no real 'cause'. Of course, there are always special 'names' for conditions... but they don't help much with fixing it.

I can ask a few diagnostic questions if you like? Cos it's weird what I've seen people's bodies learn... including stuff like this, that you really would rather you hadn't.

1. What has changed in recent weeks in your life... or maybe a little earlier, but 'forgotten' about....?

2. Anything coming up in the near future?
3. If you were to imagine a purpose for this problem (odd, I know - just ask your unconscious mind), what would it be?
