Im a 30 yr old male who has a family history of hypertension. My doc just put me on an ace inhibitor to control my blood pressure. I have basically one main concern... The nurse told me about the "Dash diet" for controlling hypertension. This diet contains alot of fruits and veggies which are high in potassium. Doing reading on the internet suggests one should not take potassium supplements while on an ace inhibitor as the body will retain potassium. I cannot find any information on the internet about anyone who does the dash diet while on an ace inhibitor, so I was hoping if anyone here could shed some light on this, or if it is anything I should worry about. Im not a diabetic, nor do i have any kidney problems that i am aware of. Should i still try to stay away from potassium rich foods?
Hi
You say you have a family history of hypertension and your doc put you on an ace inhibitor.
One question...was you own BP higher than what is considered normal?

A link to some potassium rich foods which will show that it isn't mainly fruit and veg which are high in potassium.
The DASH diet is what is recommended for all cardiovascular disease but my main concern would be whether your BP was high in the first place or did your doctor put you on it anyway?
