My husband has been complaining of his legs lately. When he showed me one in particular it was VERY swollen around the lower part ( it'stuck' out over his ankle)and the shin area was looking mottled (a maroony colour). I said it looked like he was retaining fluid which meant he could be having problems with the valves in his veins returning fluid back up his body. I was concerned about the mottling also as it looked like it could break down into an ulcer. He also suffers with restless legs at night and I wondered if these could all be connected?
He is going to try and get in at the doctor's but he may have to wait a week or so. Anyone have any advice for now?

So sorry to read of your husband's problems. I hope he can manage to get into see his Dr soon so it can be sorted. Until then I wondered if this might help - I've heard of a condition called oedema which causes swelling in lower legs and the recommendation for this is:-
Here are some of the things you can try for yourself to see if they help to reduce the swelling:
reduce the amount of salt that you take with your food, and avoid processed foods which are often high in salt
while sitting for prolonged periods at your desk, try contracting and relaxing the muscles of your legs, for example by rocking your feet onto your toes and heels every few minutes. Every hour or so get up and walk around for a while. These activities will improve the circulation in your legs and help fluid return
reduce your weight if you feel it is appropriate
gradually reduce your fluid intake
when the swelling is worse than usual, try resting on a bed with your head and legs slightly elevated, perhaps using elasticated stockings designed to reduce swelling of the legs
gradually increase your physical activity - a walk followed by elevation of the legs will help to disperse fluid that has accumulated in the feet and ankles
ensure good skincare over swollen regions to prevent skin breakdown and infection
avoid prolonged hot baths that may aggravate the condition.
Hope this might help until he gets proper medical attention.

Thank you JTH and Moonfairy for your concerns. I have told my husband that others are worried about his leg and that he REALLY should get it looked at quickly. I made sure he took out Dr's number before he left for work today and just hope that he does ring them!

I just want to say do NOT leave this for theGP to fit you in ,especially if it is painful, Even if it isnt ,if you cant get a GP appt then go to A & E.

Thank you all again for your concern and advice. My husband rang me this morning to say he can't get an appt with the Dr until Frid as she is away. I told him to try and get in to see Practice Nurse because she will be able to tell him if he needs to go to hospital. If not then I told him to go to A&E on way home from work. He is still reluctant to do this as he says it's not an accident or an emergency but I said let them decide that!
I'm waiting for his call to let mr know what he is doing,

UPDATE
My husband finally went to the local minor injury unit for some advice tonight! They feel it is not an emergency but should see his doctor when he can get an appt. They were very thorough so at least we didn't have to go and wait hours at A&E!
