Hi healthy people[sm=1syellow1.gif]
I've had a problem with the old ticker for many years now. Irregular heartbeat; buboom, buboom, buboom..............BOOM! Went to the doctor about it and he said, "do you smoke?" yes "do you drink?" yes "do you drink coffee?" yes. I remember he kind of held up his hands in despair and said, "well, what do you expect?"
I gave up caffeine a while ago and that didn't seem to help much.
I figured it must be the fags, right? Solution - give up the fags.
But I went a week without smoking at Christmas and the dodgy ticker was as bad as ever. I should say that I don't smoke a lot and I find it quite easy to go without; until, that is, I have a beer in front of me.
Now I 'm thinking it might be the booze.
Anyway, my point is, I'm glad to report that in the last couple of days I feel a lot better. I have smoked a few cigarettes and I did have a small shot of whiskey on Tuesday night. I'm going to have a few beers tonight so I will be interested to see how I feel tomorrow. If the heart is playing up it might well be the inspiration I need to give up the booze or at least cut down a bit, 'cos I do sometimes drink quite a bit at the weekend.
Another possible factor in my "miracle" recovery is that I am firmly on the juicing/raw foods trail. Not 100% raw, but then, as you may have gathered, I ain't no puritan saint.
Anybody else suffer from the same problem? Anybody know what causes it?
(apart from booze, fags and coffee)

RE: extrasystoles

Hello Chupichula (where did you get that name from?)

I guess you are saying that the Dr could find no medical reason for the boomboom of your heart. Well I have the same problem and I posted a long time ago with the same question as you.

Anyway I am a 100% sure that what I call palpitations, for me is caused by wind and a good berp always brings relief. Anxiety also plays a part but if one is anxious then they also swallow lots of air esp when they eat. And I get the prob either after food or if I am over hungry.

When you get that tell tale flutter and the heart seems to go quicker get up, walk around and drink some plain hot water (no naughty, not with a drop of scotch in it.)

Perhaps the raw diet has helped as you may be unconsciously avoiding the food (perhaps fat) that causes gastric wind. I know raw veg causes wind but thats the sort we don't talk about and its not relieved by belching.

Hope you can stay off the fags, have you seen the add that shows cholesterol supposedly being squeezed out of an artery. yukk

Good luck I hope this helps....;) Kealy

RE: extrasystoles

Hi Chupichulo

Not sure I have a "problem" but a few years ago I went through a phase of having long periods (hours) of really irregular heart beats together with a really fast heart rate. It scared me to death. I felt like I ws going to explode and one night I was carted off to casualty it was so bad. I had all the tests, wired up to the electrocardiogram, had ultrasound etc and nothing wrong was found. Doctor just told me that there was nothing wrong with my heart, this kind of thing happened to a lot of people, may be stress related and would just have to put up with it.

Since then it has reocurred a few times (but not as bad) and then I heard of Tony Blair's heart scare - sounded exactly what happened to me.

I tried cutting out all stimulants, caffeine, no E numbers etc etc but can't seem to tie it in with anything - not even stress. Just seems to happen when it feels like it. Is this anything like you?

RE: extrasystoles

Thanks for your replies. The name? Here in Spain, at least in Catalunya where i am, chulo means "cool" and then i discovered that in Madrid they say "chupi" to mean the same thing, so i kinda put the two together 'cos i liked the way it sounded. Guess it means i am "twice as cool."
Don't think it's wind, Kealy. wind manifasts as an uncomfortable feeling in the stomach which is easily solved by lying on your back and raising your legs until you let rip with a good shirtflapper. I get the irregular heartbeat when I'm lying in bed, quite relaxed trying to go to sleep. this is why i find it so irritating. It is bad immediately after eating. I find eating too much is a major cause. Solution: don't eat too much.
Rachel, sounds like you got it worse than me and you have my sympathy.
I think maybe it's just something that happens as you get older and you can't abuse your body any more in the way you did when you were 17.

RE: extrasystoles

I don't want to labour the point but I was not talking about bowel wind that results in a 'shirtflapper' as you say.

I am referring to wind higher up, in the stomach not bowels/intestines. And the fact that it is worse after eating goes with what I am saying, thats when I get my symptoms. When your lying down is also a clue to the same. As you lie down the food tends to push back up and put pressure into your chest and if you are over weight or have a hiatus hernia that will also contribute.

Go on prove me wrong next time you have those symptoms get up walk around or sit with your legs lower than your stomach and drink hot water. Go on 😉 dare ya (or you could try Gaviscon of that is what its called in Spain)

kindest regards Kealy (not Keely)

ps I'm well impressed about you living in Spain are you Spanish. My son is learning Spanish so as he can live in Spain .. he is a quantity surveyor, is there much building going on?

RE: extrasystoles

Not Spanish, Kealy. English. Been over here three years teaching English in a small town 135km west of Barcelona. There's plenty of building going on in this town. Your son's welcome to come on over and share my flat with me if he wants 'cos at the moment it's costing me far too much and I need someone to share with. More details available if the idea meets with a positive response.
