RE: Blood pressure
Hi Fudge,
It might be prudent to consult your GP as high BP over a period of time can be the cause of health problems. You may just need to keep an eye on it.

RE: Blood pressure
thank you all for this very helpful thread
my husband 58 is being treated for high bp but the meds are making him ill and miserable i've lost track of all the different ones he has tried as this has been going on all year. also he is waiting for a hernia op (4th time!) so can't exercise. he has an assessment at the hospital tomorrow to see if he is suitable for day surgery but he is worried that they won't operate because of the bp
any further tips appreciated
RE: Blood pressure
My mum has just been diagnosed with hypertension and may have a thyroid problem, which is 'borderline.' She goes for a blood test next week and then medication for thatwill follow.
A succession of bad bleeding sessions led to mum visiting the hospital and then the doctor. She was told that if she hadn't bled, she'd have had a stroke. She's now on tablets. Oh my!
Love,
Patsy.

RE: Blood pressure
12 years ago, when I was 60,I weighed 155 pounds and was exercising 7 days a week starting at 6 AM. I rode an exercise bike for an hour (going 15 miles), worked out on 17 Nautilus machines, followed by a 5 mile jog, up and down the Hollywood hills. We moved, I stopped exercisingand started to gain weight. About a year later, I rode along with my wife for her routine doctor's visit. As she started to get out of the car, she looked at me and said, "Are you feeling ok, you don't look right?" I told her I did feel a little out of sorts. She nagged me into going with her to see her doctor. They checked my blood pressure and it was 220/180 ... normal is 120/80. They had to give me two sub-lingual pills just to get it down to 150 over something. Since that time I've been on B/P meds and I hate the negative effects they have had upon me. My parents both had high blood pressure, so I stay on the meds. I don't want to end up like my aunt whose body is completely paralyzed on the left side. She had to learn to talk all over again. My love for life is greater than my hate for the meds that help to keep me alive.

I too have suffered from high BP. Once the Dr said it was up (due to pressure at work at the time I think) it shot up every time after that. I have a big hang up about BP as I had three aunts who all died very young because of strokes. But my Mum lived to 90 yrs.
Any way I was so glad to read Gina's post and agree with her whole heartedly. If you have white coat syndrome or worry about the condition buy a monitor if at all possible. I bought mine 3-4 years ago in Boots for £70. It worked a treat for me.
If you decide to buy a blood pressure monitor for use at home, then it would be wise to purchase one that is clinically validated. This way you can be assured of an accurate reading. Kealy you are right about the 'white coat hypertension' syndrome. Waiting around in the surgery or other clinical environment can sometimes make your blood pressure soar!

RE: Blood pressure
😀Hi everyone, am really happy to have come across this forum!
This thread has been really interesting for me to read. I'm a 32 year old guy and was diagnosed last year as having Polycythaemia - a blood condition where an excess of red cells makes the blood thicker and causes high blood pressure and forces the heart to work harder. My blood pressure in constantly in the upper realms of ridiculous and nothing as yet seems to be bringing it down.
I have to say I've become really anxious about it as I've recently started getting strange numbness attacks and pins and needles for no reason. My last BP reading was 210/115 and so have been started on athird batch of medication, none of which I'm happy about taking.
For various reasons I have no knowledge of there being any family history of this, and some of the solemn warnings from my GP have left me feeling very depressed about the whole thing.
I'll be keeping a watch here and will certainly try out any alternative remedies that I find!

RE: Blood pressure
I have read all replies with interest as I also suffer from hypertension, brought on my work-related stress. I have found aromatic baths good and I have been taken hawthorn and garlic capsules (R79) for years - works well, however I still have problems as it is not easy to suppress ones reactions! Worst I had was 210/180 and i'd never wish to see that happen again. Now it is 151/99 - a week past Friday.
I'm very wary about beta blockers also
I'm male and 55 and my mum died with a massive heart attack at 50, and her side of family suffered from heart-related problems
Yes I need to try and act sensibly!
RE: Blood pressure
i had raging high blood pressure through summer, probably stress related through a few anxieties, so looked for something other than pharmaceutical remedies.
found ayurvedic Mukta Vati on the internet, reckons to work in 3 - 4 days, and yes, it did.
highest reading i got was 180/99 and its now staying at a steady 130 - 140/82-90... the GP's nurse has signed me off for two months and is happy with what i am doing. helps relieve anxiety and stress and insomnia + other stuff and certainly the feeling anxious was something i noticed feeling relieved almost straight away.
far easier for me than all the different vits and supplements!
