does anyone know if it is possible to have an angioplasty (stent) if there are 2 blockages in the arteryrather thanhaving a by-pass op.

RE: angioplasty

No personal knowledge but a google on "angioplasty two blockages" reveals that it's a possibility.

RE: angioplasty

Hi

i think it depends on how blocked they are. If an artery is very bad then it would be very difficult to get a stent in.

The surgeon/consultant then may advise a heart bypass. But depends on the patients overall health as this is a major operation.

Only know this as my grandfather has 4 stents in his heart, and a bypass would have been impossible.

RE: angioplasty

Multiple stents are very common, even in the same artery. Usually possible at a 90% stenosis (narrowing). Obviously depends on the % narrowing and the fragility of the artery when the cardiologist goes in.

Generally only look at the 3 main arteries - LAD, RCA, Cx. If either 1 or 2 vessels are blocked then chances are they will do both at the same time. If all 3 vessels, then they will stent the 2 causing the most problems (determined by ECG), and wait 6 months before stenting the 3rd.

Additionally there are 3 main types of stents - 1. bare metal, 2. drug eluting (coated). Choice is dependent on what they see when they do the stents.

Generally access is via the groin, or if unable to use the groin, then access via the wrist.

NB: Whilst I am not a Dr, I have 4+ years experience workingon cardiac wards.

RE: angioplasty

Thank you all
my husband was told last week that he has 2 blockages in the left artery and i know we have to wait to be told what treatment he will have but we didn't know if it is possible to have stent if there are 2 blockages in the same artery as we are hoping that will be the treatment . It was abit of a shock as before the angiogram the surgeon told him that they were doing that because the other tests he had were inconclusive and they didn't really expect to find anything but they did. They just said there were 2 blockages LAD but didn't how bad they were. He didn't see anyone except the ward staff afterwards who explained that the panel will decide whether he needs a stent or a by pass
The problem for us is that panel who decides tretment and priority didn't meet untl this Tuesday and we don't know when he will hear their decision
which is making us a bit anxious but I guess if it was really bad they might have treated him straight away
thanks again for the info much appreciated
