I've developed a nasty cold - but the worst part is the very runny nose 🙁 I'm also suffering with hayfever at the moment and its really annoying. Feel like I have a tissue permanently attached to my face! Am burning Eucalyptus, Bergamot and Tea Tree at the moment. Feeling very sorry for myself ...

Bless your heart!

I have just (yesterday) ordered a gadget from lloyds chemist that claims to reduce hayfever symptoms through light therapy in your nostrils, apparently reducing inflammation. I had never heard of such a thing, but googled it and it sounds like it could work, so thought I would give it a try! I have a permanently sniffy nose as I get hayfever and am also allergic to house dust mite and many other things! It is just so annoying to have to carry a tissue everywhere!

I am keeping my fingers crossed, and will update you all on whether it makes any difference!

I hoep you feel a bit better soon, just take it easy for a few days!

C x

Woke up this morning with a rotten cold - it's really inconvenient because of the time of the year!

Please could our HP experts recommend the most effective, in your opinion, ways to zap the cold quickly? I don't have a fever, just runny nose, woolly head, scratchy throat. My colds tend to drag on for a bit and usually develop into a blocked nose and a chesty cough within a couple of days. I'd really like to speed up the process if possible!

We are snowed in quite badly and I am struggling to get out to the shops - so at the moment can only rely on any remedies/magic potion ingredients that I already have in the house.

Many thanks

Masha

Yep, I've got a cold too just started yesterday morning, my nose is like a tap. Managed to get through yesterday I had a funeral in the morning, shopping, etc, etc, but today feeling rough around the edges. I organised the works xmas do, which went off really well, everyone enjoyed.

I'm now sipping hot lemon and honey, will be going to go to bed early and hope to banish it by tomorrow!

Any suggestions gladly accepted and to anyone not well, I wish you a speedy recovery.

Hi Masha and everyone with this cold - which seems to be running riot!

Large doses of vitamin C (with zinc) is supposed to do the trick - see here - I get the tablet that makes into a drink from the supermarket for ease of purchase, but best is the ester form of vitamin C either as a capsule or powder from a healthfood shop, which is less acid on my stomach. Unfortunately medical establishment has not heeded Linus Pauling's excellent research done 60 years ago and we have all continued to suffer as a result!

For home remedies - lemon and honey; echinacea or cats claw to boost the immune system; sniffing slightly saline water (1 level teasp salt to 1 pint tepid water) to rinse out the nose - I'd add a drop of teatree to this; olbas/eucalyptus oil on handky or pillow; and to clear a stuffed up nose make a tent with a towel over the head and breathe deeply steam from boiling hot water with menthol, eucalyptus, olbas or teatree oil added to it and do this 3 x per day.

Hope the cold goes soon!

Caroline N, I noticed you mentioned vitamin c ester, was reading on how it also penetrates the cell membrane faster than regular vitamin c,just started on supplements as being a smoker I would need more vit. c and was also wondering how long it takes to see results,Im also taking vit. b complex, vit. E for antioxidant and acetyl L carnitine for memory and cal/mag.

Hi Star and Fleur

If you read the article mentioned below and see here you will see that you need to take a lot of vit C when the body is under stress - the odd little bit doesn't make much difference. If you take enough you will feel the difference in a few hours!

Another thing I forgot to mention that's helpful is elderberry syrup - if you made any this year (I didn't as we had very few elderberries), but you can get Sambucol or similar from a healthfood shop.

The other supplements you are taking Star seem sensible.

Hope you are all recovered for Christmas! 🙂 🙂
