I have suffered with Headaches all my life and Migraine since early twenties. I am now 57 and consider myself fit and healthy. But the headaches and Migraines are getting me down. They are so debilitating, I am afraid to go out, just in case. I wake at 5/6am with them and as I still work full time have to keep having sick days. I find that people are quite unsupportive and wonder if anyone on healthy pages has any tips for me to try. I take Migril, a prescription drug and Propain. These are not working as well as they used to. I have a tens machine which I put on the back of my neck and a hot water bottle. What more can I do.

:grouphug: Hello lindavinton,

Have you had your eyes tested lately?, as they could be the cause of it, also having healing could help you also.
i know many people who have been helped by it, just go to your nearest spiritulist church and ask them if they do it there, you normally dont pay but leave a donation,

take care

Hi Linda,

Have a look at the previous posts on this subject. There's a lot of interesting stuff there. I've picked up some ideas to try, will let you know how they go.

Sue

Hi ,
I have had waking headaches ,5am onwards i.e. after 5 or 6 hours sleep for the past 5 years and am now almost 65 . I have got tothe stage that i think if this is what the rest of my life will be like that I cant go on . At first they would disappear after about half an ours activity or with pain killers . now they last all day or come and go intermittently . I have had 2 scans one on my head and the other on my neck and there are some bony arthritic nodules which may be squeezing nerve endings and 2 degenerated discs in my neck . I am about to go and see Martin Knight , orthopaedic surgeon with a view to surgery . he operated on my lower back 10 tears ago . I would trust Martin Knight implicitly but i am still very cautious perhaps scared is the correct word . I will have to be absolutely sure that the diagnosis is correct first . Do you have any other symptoms apart from the waking headaches ?
Sue

just i case you havent found anything on the other forums, try slowly decreasng caffeine if you partake in its consumption, by cutting it out you will get worse headaches for a time, so its a case of weening yourself off it. definitely get some remedial work (massage or trigger point therapy) on levator scapulae and sternocleidomastoid muscles and ensure you frequently move your head through full ranges of movement both rotation left and right a full ninety degrees, side flexion to about 30-40 degrees, and gentle forward flexion and extension. I had a client recently who had forward head posture and therefore trapeziu muscles were working al the time, a little reeducation and working rhomboids to brace scapulae and headaches decreased dramatically. Also side lying exercise imagine centre of shoulder ball and socket joint is in the centre of a clock face and move it as far as poss from 12-6 6-12 3-9 9-3 then anticlockwise circles then clockwise circles minimium of 7 each way to ensure muscles are working thru' full range.
regards from a former sufferer

Hi Lindavinton,

What happened to you in your early twenties to switch headaches to migraines? May I suggest you try EFT and/or EmoTrance. My understanding is that everything without has commenced as thought patterns from within. These two therapies can help you.

It is only the passage of time which allows people to reinforce their own thinking that they have forgotten why things that happen are happening to them now.

Cheers

I take no Caffeine at all and haven`t for a number of years. As for what happened in my twenties, nothing to my knowledge.
I have just seen a chiropractor and off course they can help, but the cost is beyond my budget, as is most complementary medicine.
Sorry to sound like a moaner but it seems the `Therapys`are only for those who can afford luxuries.
I am single, with a mortgage on a low wage, so only self help will do. I will try the excercises as mentioned. I* am seeing my Occupatioal Health Doctor today, maybe he can help.
One thing I get really fed up with is when Dr`s say its all rebound from painkillers. Chicken and Egg!!

EFT you can try on yourself for free (download the manual at www.emofree.com). Also, a lot of practitioners will offer discounted rates or even free treatments to those who just can't afford it, you just have to be brave enough to ask them. The worst they can say is 'no'. 😉

Love and Reiki Hugs

Linda

this is a problem in this country; we have an NHS, and are unaccustomed to paying for our healthcare, and have no idea what value to put on it. From a therapist's perspective we lose many patients who can't afford treatment, some of them genuinely so (though I'm willing to drop my prices for them where I'm convinced they genuinekly can't afford care).

Anyway, there are moves afoot to try to get Chiropractic & Osteopathy more available on the NHS (they currently are, in a very limited capacity from longer-term contracts residual from the days of fund-holding GPs 10+ years ago). This is on a county by county basis, and depends on the chiros&osteos in an entire county, getting together, putting together a proposed contract, meeting with local health authorities and getting the contracts agreed and signed - early stages in all areas I believe. Don't expect Gs to know about this yet; hopefully in a few more months we'll all know more.

I've had migraines since my twenties which have got more frequent as i've got older. Until recently I had them every single day. I can sympathise with you 100% as they completely ruin your quality of life and most people simply don't undertsand how truly debilitating they are with the excruciating pain, the vomiting, inability to swallow due to the digestive system closing down and so on. I've screamed in agony before now with them. I used to be on a cocktail of drugs for them but as i wanted to get pregnant this wasn't an option in the long term. The GPs were useless saying "Oh you can only take paracetamol if you're pregnant" - GREAT. Paracetamol would be like eating sweets and would have a similar effect . NONE whatsoever on a migraine. They also told me about having headaches because i was taking painkillers - yeah great - but they didn't give me a solution to the problem. 🙁

It depends sometimes what causes the migraines. It took me 15 years (with no help from the doctors) to find out it was the nerve from my shoulder, through my neck into my head that was causing the problem. I've tried most therapies and the only one that has had any lasting effect was the Bowen Technique. Acupuncture and physiotherapy helped for a short time, EFT helped if done as soon as I started getting the pain (but not after when the pain becomes more intense), homeopathy didn't help (but helped with other problems I had). Bowen was the only one to do the trick.

Please don't take this personally (as it's not meant to be) - but sometimes you do have to fork out a bit of money in order to get some results. I'm single with a mortgage and I have borrowed money in the past - as i was so completely desperate to find a solution to the problem. I'd have done anything. I also didn't spend on other things (like clothes etc) to fund the treatment. I did work with someone who said she'd never fork out for treatments like I did. My answer was that she was obviously so lucky as to have never experienced the pain that I'd experienced. Just to let you know my Bowen treatments cost £25 per hour (which is very reasonable when compared to other therapies) and i had to have 1 treatment a week for 3 weeks. Sometimes people don't need any further treatment whilst others may need a "top up" every few months or so.

Good luck.

I recently went to see a doctor about recurring occular migraines. It was so frustrating, he pretty much said that there was nothing I could do except take painkillers, rest and make sure I give up smoking!

I have found that massage around the head and neck is sxtremely usefull. But you need to have someone willing and able to give them as soon as the migraines strikes...

By using the tecniques I posted previously, paying particular attention to the function of sternocleidomastoid, and self massaging clavicle, mastoid process and head of sternum, you will be able to self treat if an attack starts, and by incorporating it daily into your functional routine you will ,as I have greatly reduce the frequency.
I now only suffer after long driving session or when kids are playing up, but in both cases only when my diet and hydration have been poor for one reason or other.
any news from anyone trying the exercises????
Regards
GAz
