Has anyone any experience of using the ayurvedic remedy Triphala - would be interested in any input i.e. was it good,, is it safe, any side effects, what it did for you.

RE: Triphala

That's a blast from the past. My mum used to take it when I was very young. I honestly can't remember the effects, although I don't think they were bad. I would suggest going via someone who is qualified in ayurvedic medicine who can give you the best instructions on how to use it and provide you with a quality source.

RE: Triphala

There isn't any practitioners where I live so that is why I posted here - just read quite a lot of good reports about it.

Could you ask your mum how she felt when she took it and did it work?

RE: Triphala

Triphala is arguably the most popular remedy used in Ayurvedic medicine, and there have probably been more tests done on it than on any other Ayurvedic remedy. It is actually a combination of three herbs which work together to detoxify the system. It is mildly laxative and in fact its most common use is to promote healthy bowel function. It is well known to have beneficial effects on the digestive system. As with all herbs it is vital to buy from a trustworthy source as many high street shops sell toxic products. I notice that you can order it online from the NutriCentre in London.

RE: Triphala

You can be sure that Triphala is absolutely safe. It has a second-to-none following of devoted users and I think the worst thing it could possibly do is make you a bit loose for a short while - but only if you are 'bunged up'. If this is the case you would be best advised to build up the dosage gradually over a few days.

RE: Triphala

Well I'm bunged up that is why I bought it because it had such good reports. But I'm very very sensitive to anything I take and that is why I have been asking the questions so will start off low and see how I go. Thanks for the input though

RE: Triphala

Would triphala make you become "laxative dependant" as with other things that move the bowels and would it deplete electrolyte levels? Would anyone know?

RE: Triphala

Quite the reverse. Triphala is not a laxative as such. It is actually a tonic which improves the tone of the intestines. Furthermore it cannot deplete anything. On the contrary, it actually restores balance. This is because of the meticulous way in which the three constituent herbs have been chosen to complement one another.

RE: Triphala

Thanks for that. I had to go to the Dr. today because of the constipation problem (I actually did a bowel wash yesterday and got rid of about 6 weeks worth but it had to be done.)
However he has prescribed lactulose which I don't really want to take and he's also asked for a liver test - so obviously worried sick till I get the results. Would triphala sort out the liver.
Apart from the constipation which I thought was IBS because of the stomach pains I was having I feel OK so think the test will come back OK - had been taking senna and think that contributed to the pains then taking peppermint oil to combat the pain but since stopping them both the gripey pains have gone. Think it has all been due to an impacted bowel.

RE: Triphala

Triphala does help the liver. You might like to read a very informative article on:-

http://www.planetherbs.com/articles/triphala.html

However, if your liver is playing up I would read a very comprehensive article by Dr. Cabot - a very well qualified Australian who is an authority on these matters. The liver is very treatable so you don't need to worry unduly.

RE: Triphala

Very interesting reading on both articles.
Can I ask when you start taking triphala do you get a sense of feeling like you are going through a detox - any side effects at all.

RE: Triphala

Just out of curiosity - what would be the signs of liver problems (I hardly drink alcohol so it wouldn't be cirohsis!) and apart from the constipation and bloating that is the only symptoms I have.

RE: Triphala

Hi Janet,

I am sure the Triphala article will tell you more about possible detox. symptoms than there is space for here, but in short, the severity of detox. symptoms is greater the more you are in need of it. Having said that, Triphala is much gentler than many other remedies.
There are many symptoms of liver toxification, the most common possibly being headaches, some others being poor fat digestion (constipation or diarrhoea),fatigue, faintness (due to low sugar levels), feeling cold, lowered immunity, easy bruising and poor wound healing, spider blood vessels on face, coated tongue....the list goes on. Fast foods are just as likely a cause as alcohol, as are caffeine in coffee and tea, food additives and colourings, too much chocolate, etc.,etc.

RE: Triphala

Thanks for that I'll read the article again. Does time depend on severity of problems etc.
