Hi
I don't know what to do anymore with L's skin condition. she has bad eczema and now she has a fungal skin infection as well! It spread a lot because I mistook it for eczema.
Now I am wondering what other natural remedy I can use to help her instead of the usual stuff we were given by our doctor (cortisone)? DD has taken sooo much cortisone in her young life that I am beginning to become really really worried.
On another healhy life website I read that we should build up her immune system from within with probiotics. I also want to start giving her SAmbucol to help her i.s. but is it save to start with probiotics and sambucol at the same time? Does anyone know what remedies really work with fungal infection, especially if it has spread so much?
Can anyone help?

Thank you sososo much for any help/advice/tip!

Welcome to HP TanteT

Have you put fungal infection/Candida into the search engine here on HP? - there are a number of past posts on this matter. I realise every person is different but it will be possible to pick up much information about fungal infections in general - of which there are many, many different sorts.

Topically, you can use some over-the-counter creams - speak to your pharmacist. There is Tea-tree oil, which will need a carrier on delicate skin, and other possible antifungal oils, which I don't have experience of.

Basically you are right to say fungal infection is due to a compromised immune system - and cortisone supresses it (by reducing inflammation). 80% of our immune system is located in the gut and it is vital to support this by having the right bacteria in the gut. It depends on the age of L/DD?, if still an infant then L. acidophilus infantis is necessary, but for older children and adults then L. acidophilus and Bifidobacteria, plus Saccharomyces boulardii GG will help restore this balance. It will be especially compromised if antibiotics have been used a number of times. Plain bioyoghurts help, but the drink-type ones now contain sweeteners which are not good for anyone, let alone children.

To help the good bacteria to flourish s/he will need to eat as much fruit and veg as possible - this can be in the form of home-made soups and home-made smoothies (including plain bioyoghurt), reduce sugar to a minimum - use natural honey - and avoid white flour goods and white rice -wholemeal is definitely best.

To encourage the skn to rcover, omega oils are necessary - Omega-3 from oily fish (salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines) and Omega-6 from borage and evening primrose oils. This will also help reduce inflammation.

It is a complex situation that is really better if sorted by a qualified nutritional therapist, see here. There are also specialist childrens' nutritional therapists like Sally Child.

Although Sambucol helps boost the immune system, it is basically antiviral - see here, so may not be that helpful against fungal infections, but a herbalist will know more.

Hope this is of some help.

Fungal infection

How do you know it's a fungal infection? Who diagnosed it? Cortisone is no use for a fungal infection, you need proper anti-fungals. Please take the child to a proper doctor before things get worse.

There was a tragic incident in Kingston a few years ago, where a child died from septicaemia due to infected nappy rash. The parents had been taking him to a homeopath and refused to seek medical advice, even when, eventually, the homeopath begged them to. The parents were prosecuted for neglect. You can't afford to take risks with young children.
