RE: adhd

Hello Gail.

My older son was diagnosed as having ADHD when he was 8. He is now 21. He was put on Ritalin and it helped him a lot (academically speaking)... but his appetite would go out the window and since he was already underweight, it was yet another issue to worry about. He didn't take Ritalin during week-end nor during holidays. The dose was quite low too. The first week of the summer holidays, he was so low... so depressed... I was told it was normal after taking Ritalin for a while. But his appetite came back and we had a wonderful summer, once he became his old self again.

I don't regret trying Ritalin... but in my opinion, and in my son's case, the side effects were too much to deal with. When Sept came, and much to his doctor's disapproval, I decided my son would do without Ritalin. Now I realize it was the best decision for us.

What worked for him was : a low sugar diet... very limited access to video games and tv... playing outside... lots of sleep (going to bed early)... sports... and shorter periods of studying and doing homework. After 20 minutes, he was exhausted and didn't want to work anymore. We'd go back to school work after a physical activity and it proved to be the best solution for us. Ok, it's hard work. As a parent, you're tested beyond your limits. But it's worth it.

Oh. Thought you should know : School wasn't very cooperative... so as a parent, I had to fight a few battles.

And when they grow older, it does get better! He's 21 now, and has joined the Army. He's doing great. And he's quite mature for his age, probably because he had to deal and cope with ADHD.

Good luck!

Marie
🙂

RE: adhd

Check the US NAET site - http://www.naet.com/ - they did have some research up there on it, thought couldn't find it last time I looked. That's what I would try first if there's a practioner in your area. There's a link on there for NEAT Europe with UK practitioners on.

There's quite a bit of noise about omega3 oil at the mo. [&:]

Other options include cranial osteopathy.

Would certainly cut out additives & sugars in the meantime. 😉
