Is this the breakthrough we have all hoped for, i was drawn to this today, i usually skip through directly to the Forums and only occassionally see something on the front page that stops me.

Chinese Salad Plant Kills Cancer

15/10/2008
A new cancer medicine has been developed using a compound from traditional Chinese medicine. Scientists from the University of Washington have created a new compound from an ancient Chinese Salad plant that kills particular cancer cells 1,200 times more specifically than current drugs. Already experts are saying that this will be like having a chemotherapy treatment but without the harsh side effects.
The compound in question is artemisinin which is obtained from the sweet wormwood plant. The scientists have bound a chemical homing agent to the compound so it by passes the body's healthy cells and specifically attacks cancer cells.
The Chief author of the study and chemistry professor at Washington University, Tomikazu Sasaki, said of artemisinin that "The compound is like a special agent planting a bomb inside the cell." Sasaki then described the limitations with current drugs, saying "Side effects are a major limitation to current chemotherapies," and that "some patients even die from them."
The artemisinin compound has been tested on human breast, prostate and leukaemia cancer cells with successful results. In current chemotherapy, the side effects are so extreme because for every 5 to 10 cancer cells that are killed 1 healthy cell is also killed. Artemisinin, even in its untreated state is able to kill 100 cancer cells for every 1 healthy cell, but with the new version that figure rises to 1,200 cancer cells for each healthy cell, making side effects almost negligible.
Professor Henry Lai of UW bioengineering who is the study co-author further described how the process worked. He said "Cancer cells get sloppy at maintaining free iron, so they are more sensitive to artemisinin," which specifically reacts with iron to create free radicals. These free radicals that are released inside the cancer cell lead to cell death.
Lai also added that "Most currently available drugs are targeted to specific cancers," whereas "This compound works on a general property of cancer cells, their high iron content."

Would this be used before hand, same as we eat fresh food and take vitamins, as a precaution???

I read this with interest, too. Sounds impressive - an effective cancer treatment that is pretty gentle on the body. Oh, if only....

There's been a lot of similar promising plant components,
while later all of them revealed various limitations.
The recent trend in oncology is tumour cells getting more
and more resistant to classic treatments and able to
replace itself by another tumour type.

I saw an item on my local news last night about cryotherapy being used in kidney cancer successfuly. Very fine probes are inserted near the tumour then the freezing liquid is injected. This then covers the tumour and freezes it, cutting off its oxygen supply. This apparently kills it off and the success rate is very high with the trials carried out so far. It also cuts the cost of expensive surgery and having patient's on dialysis while waiting for transplants!
Let's hope they can use this method on other cancers.

Love and light

:FIFangel: I would like to believe it but to be honest i dont, my husband went to a chinese herbalist, when he was first told he had cancer, he was given some wood things to drink, they were horrid but they did nothing, i honestly believe that there will never be a cure for cancer, in generations to come they may well find it diminishing but i think, it will go down as an illness that kills like the black death did. there are to many strains of cancer to beat it,

take care

Blackcrow, i also feel the same, but we can only hope, they say one in three will get some form of cancer, and each of us know people who have it or have had it, it is a scary disease and it amazes me that we can do allsorts of things these days but cant get a cure.
Its so sad. Its such a cruel disease. It has no bounds and no discriminations.

There have been many diseases over the years that have baffled medical science. One that comes to mind is scurvy-it killed millions of people and no one had a clue how to stop it. Even when 'the cure' was discovered, people dismissed it and allowed the deaths to keep occuring for another thirty four years. All those lives lost due to a nutritional deficiency-unbelievable! Unfortunately, we haven't learned from our past history and continue to look for the 'magic pill'. We are killing ourselves with knives, forks and poor nutritional sources and we continue to try to find health in a prescription bottle. The cure for many diseases that plague us are right under our noses, but they will continue to be suppressed because they are so basic and won't make anyone wealthy. I will continue on the path I have chosen and wish those well who have chosen theirs.

Well, I feel like the mad scientist this morning - I have been up most of the night researching B17 after reading Just received this.........

It has really struck a cord with me, is cancer a deficiency?
Why are Eskimo's free from cancer?

I have never believed in trying to poison your body back to health, although I do have a friend that recovered with chemo but the other special people in my/our lives didn’t make it.

I will certainly be adding B17 to our diets.

What a great idea !

Louisa, you would be well served to research B-17 and other supplements. Your point is well taken-why don't the Eskimos contract cancer? If you continue the research, you will find that other cultures are also not similarly afflicted with this disease-WHY? Cancer is a chronic, metabolic disease that lives a mutated existence. It needs to be nurtured like any other living thing, although what it needs for existence is not healthful for any living thing that does not lead this mutated existence. It needs an acidic body, a lack of Vit D3, a generally unhealthy diet, a lack of exercise, etc. In my research after being diagnosed, I asked my herbalist what would be my best course of action since it appeared that there were a number of ways to attack this disease. Her reply was kick it's rear, do it all, and that's what I'm doing. If people would just incorporate one of the steps into their lives , they would be amazed!
People with cancer, almost without exception, are in a very acidic state-cancer loves it! Cancer is anerobic-it does not live in oxygen. If they put their bodies into an alkaline state, the cancer would cease to exist. It only exists because we allow it to. Cancer has been on a strong run since the 1940's-it's man made. We have rendered our immune systems to a very weakened state due to toxins, nutrition and unhealthy lifestyles. There will never be a pill to cure it. Chemotherapy will one day be looked upon as we now look upon the medicine from the Dark Ages-how could we ever have done this to ourselves? We have seen the enemy...........in the mirror

Cancer is a dis-ease of the way we live: the toxins in our body, aluminium in our deodorants, steroids in our water systems, smoking, drinking, our non-healing of our emotions and lack of understanding of who we are in essence. It is a lifestyle dis-ease and cannot be cured by a magic pill.

We need to eliminate all the substances that weaken our energy bodies/bodies and understand that poisoning ourselves with substances that have no place in our bodies will lead to dis-ease. As kcatdeejay says diet is critically important too.

kcatdeejay - I wholeheartedly agree with your words.

......due to the complications of....

Thank you, Rosi1. I believe with all my heart and soul that cancer is beatable and I am literally betting my life on it. There was one other item I wanted to touch on in my response to Louisa. Have you ever noticed how many deaths they say are attributable to the 'complications caused by cancer'? They should be truthful and say that the death was caused by a weakened immune system due to the chemotherapy, such as pneumonia and who knows what else. My best friend died in 2002 due to those 'complications'. His widow says he went down hill right after the chemo started.

It makes no sense to me whatsoever to fight cancer with pure poisons. Hopefully the penny will drop at some point in our existence.

When the time is right we will all be shaking our heads in disbelief at the poisons we use to fight cancer.

The body can only fight with a strong immune system, not with a body that has been severely impacted with poisons.

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis Kcat.
I believe in everything you say, I certainly would not be rolling over and accepting poison as a cure without one hell of a lot of research on the particular diagnosis.

It's also true that more money is made from cancer than people who actually die from it.
My sister in law was wrongly diagnosed, the doctors told her that the mole she had was a wart, used cryotherapy and then (too late) realised it was melanoma.
The second they started chemo, she went downhill rapidly and never came out of hospital.

She was a young beautiful woman and it was an unnecessary death.
